Day Shift Project Overview Sheakley is seeking an experienced Safety Manager to provide on-site safety leadership for a large-scale commercial higher education construction project in Blacksburg, Virginia. This role will primarily support mechanical, plumbing, and underground utility operations throughout multiple phases of construction. The Safety Manager will partner closely with project leadership, field supervision, subcontractors, and craft personnel to identify hazards, strengthen compliance, and ensure work is performed safely and efficiently.
Primary construction activities include:
Underground utility installation Hydronic piping systems Commercial plumbing installation Equipment setting and installation Prefabricated rack installation Mechanical system start-up and commissioning Subcontractor coordination within an active construction environment This is a field-focused position requiring consistent site presence, strong communication skills, and the ability to proactively address safety concerns before they result in incidents or project delays. Key Responsibilities Provide daily safety oversight for mechanical, plumbing, utility, and equipment installation activities Conduct routine jobsite inspections, safety audits, and field observations Evaluate planned work activities and identify hazards before work begins Review and support job hazard analyses, pre-task plans, and site-specific safety procedures Monitor contractor and subcontractor compliance with OSHA and project safety requirements Lead and participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and field safety discussions Document safety observations, corrective actions, and compliance concerns Track corrective actions through completion and escalate unresolved hazards when necessary Support incident, injury, near-miss, and property damage investigations Assist with identifying root causes and developing preventative measures Collaborate with project management and field supervision to resolve safety concerns Promote accountability, hazard awareness, and continuous improvement across the project Maintain accurate safety documentation and reporting Required Qualifications OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification Commercial construction safety experience Strong working knowledge of OSHA construction standards Experience conducting jobsite inspections and safety audits Ability to recognize hazards and implement effective corrective actions Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to work full-time on-site in Blacksburg, Virginia Comfortable working around active mechanical, plumbing, utility, and equipment installation activities Preferred Qualifications
OSHA 500
