At Liesfeld Contractor, our Safety Managers are an essential part of the field team. This is a hands-on, field-focused position responsible for promoting a strong safety culture, identifying and correcting hazards, supporting our crews and project leadership, and ensuring work is performed safely and in compliance with applicable OSHA and regulatory requirements. You'll work closely with Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, equipment operators, and field employees to provide safety leadership across active construction projects. This role spans the full spectrum of safety leadership—from developing and maintaining company safety programs and managing client safety requirements to walking up to a crew in the field and providing direct, hands-on coaching. 6:00 AM-3:30 PM | Average 58+ hours per week •schedule may vary based on operational needs, emergency repairs, and field demands• Key Responsibilities Field Safety & Jobsite Oversight Maintain a consistent, visible, and hands-on presence across assigned jobsites Conduct daily safety inspections, observations, and jobsite walkthroughs Identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, and potential hazards and ensure appropriate corrective action is taken Monitor high-risk activities including excavation and trenching, heavy equipment operations, lifting operations, traffic control, utility work, fall protection, and other critical construction activities Stop or intervene in unsafe work when necessary and work with field leadership to correct the issue Monitor compliance with required PPE, site-specific safety procedures, and company expectations Work closely with Foremen and Superintendents to reinforce safe work practices and maintain accountability in the field Safety Planning & Documentation Review and support project-specific safety plans and procedures Review Pre-Task Plans (PTPs), Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs), permits, inspections, and other required safety documentation Ensure required safety documentation is completed accurately and maintained appropriately Track identified hazards, corrective actions, and follow-up activities Assist with developing and continuously improving company safety policies, procedures, and programs Training & Employee Development Conduct new-hire safety orientations, refresher training, toolbox talks, and ongoing jobsite safety education Lead and facilitate safety meetings across all levels of the organization, from formal all-hands meetings to daily field briefings, ensuring active participation from employees and trade partners Provide real-time, hands-on coaching and instruction to field crews during active work—not simply during scheduled meetings or training sessions Reinforce safe work practices by engaging employees where the work is happening and addressing unsafe conditions or behaviors as they occur Coach and support Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, and field employees in applying safety expectations to day-to-day operations Develop and deliver training materials and programs that address project-specific hazards and applicable safety requirements Document safety meeting participation, key discussion points, and follow-up items, and communicate outstanding actions to project leadership Promote a culture where safety education is continuous, practical, and integrated into the work—not limited to formal training events Regulatory Compliance Ensure jobsites comply with applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations, including OSHA standards Conduct routine inspections, audits, and compliance reviews Stay current on applicable OSHA regulations and construction safety requirements Maintain accurate safety records and documentation Assist with regulatory inspections and respond to safety-related inquiries as needed Incident Investigation & Corrective Action Investigate employee, subcontractor, equipment, and property damage incidents, as well as near misses Gather facts, interview witnesses, document conditions, and collect photographs and other supporting information Prepare timely and thorough incident reports Identify contributing factors and root causes and recommend appropriate corrective actions Track corrective actions through completion and verify that issues have been properly addressed Monitor incident trends and recommend preventative measures to reduce future incidents Communication & Collaboration Build strong, professional relationships with employees, field leadership, clients, and project partners while maintaining appropriate safety accountability Communicate safety expectations clearly, directly, and respectfully, and address concerns proactively before they become incidents or compliance issues Work closely with Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, Estimators, and company leadership to identify safety requirements, address concerns, and support safe project execution Participate in project planning, safety meetings, and operational discussions to ensure safety requirements are understood and incorporated into project planning and execution Serve as Liesfeld's primary safety representative with clients, general contractors, subcontractors, and other project partners, including attending client safety meetings and responding to client safety requirements, bulletins, and requests Develop and maintain strong working relationships with client and general contractor safety representatives, ensuring Liesfeld remains responsive to project-specific safety expectations Proactively communicate with Estimators and Project Managers regarding safety requirements that may affect project cost, staffing, schedule, or operations, including: Client-specific safety programs and requirements Required safety staffing or oversight PPE and equipment requirements Permits and associated costs Training and certification requirements Elevated-risk activities or site conditions Engage early in project planning whenever possible to identify safety requirements and potential cost or operational impacts before work begins Continue to support Estimating and Project Management throughout the life of the project as client expectations, project scope, site conditions, or regulatory requirements change Serve as a safety resource, advocate, and leader for project teams and company operations, balancing regulatory compliance, client expectations, operational needs, and practical field execution Required Qualifications Proven experience in construction safety, heavy civil, site development, utility, or related construction environments Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible construction or safety experience Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and influence employees and field leadership Strong understanding of OSHA requirements and construction safety practices Experience conducting jobsite inspections, safety observations, and hazard assessments Experience investigating incidents and implementing corrective actions Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in the field Strong work ethic, dependable attendance, and professional accountability Ability to build relationships while maintaining appropriate authority and safety expectations Valid Virginia driver's
