Job Description:

The Safety Field Specialist supports the organization's commitment to providing a safe and healthy work environment for employees, contractors, customers, and the communities it serves. This position serves as a field-based safety resource responsible for promoting a strong safety culture, identifying hazards, assisting with regulatory compliance, supporting incident investigations, and providing safety guidance to operations personnel. The Safety Field Specialist works closely with field operations, construction crews, contractors, supervisors, and leadership to ensure safe work practices are consistently applied across facilities, construction projects, maintenance activities, and emergency response operations. The Specialist functions primarily as a safety coach, advisor, and compliance resource while helping drive continuous improvement in workplace safety performance. This is a primarily field-based position requiring 5 days per week in the field/office.

Responsibilities:

Field Safety Support:

Conduct routine field observations, safety audits, inspections, and job site evaluations Observe work practices and provide real-time coaching to employees and contractors Identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, and operational risks and recommend corrective actions Support pipeline construction, maintenance, service, and emergency response activities through field safety oversight Assist supervisors and employees with hazard recognition and risk mitigation strategies Participate in job safety briefings, tailboard meetings, and pre-job planning activities Promote a culture of safety accountability and continuous improvement

Safety Compliance:

Monitor compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, operating procedures, and industry standards Support implementation of safety initiatives and programs Conduct facility and job-site inspections to identify compliance concerns and improvement opportunities Assist with regulatory inspections and audits Maintain documentation associated with inspections, observations, corrective actions, and compliance activities Support contractor safety oversight efforts and ensure contractor compliance with applicable safety requirements

Incident Investigation and Reporting:

Assist with investigations involving injuries, vehicle incidents, property damage, near misses, and safety concerns Collect facts, documentation, photographs, witness statements, and supporting evidence Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action development Prepare reports, summaries, and documentation related to incidents and investigations Monitor corrective actions to ensure timely completion

Safety Training and Awareness:

Support delivery of safety training and awareness initiatives Assist in development and presentation of training materials, toolbox talks, job aids, and safety communications Reinforce safe work practices through coaching and field engagement Assist with onboarding and safety orientation programs Support implementation of annual safety campaigns and special emphasis initiatives

Risk Assessment and Hazard Management:

Conduct safety assessments, hazard reviews, and risk evaluations Support Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Job Safety Analysis (JSA) activities Assist in identifying emerging risks associated with operations, construction activities, equipment, and environmental factors Recommend practical mitigation strategies to reduce risk exposure Support implementation and tracking of corrective and preventive actions

Emergency Response Support:

Provide safety support during emergency operations and restoration activities Participate in emergency drills, exercises, and readiness activities Assist with safety monitoring during significant incidents and emergency events Support operational leaders by identifying safety concerns during emergency response activities Participate in after-action reviews and lessons learned processes

Program Administration and Metrics:

Maintain safety records, reports, inspection logs, and corrective action tracking systems Support development of safety performance metrics and trend analysis Assist with preparation of reports and presentations for management and leadership Utilize safety management systems and reporting tools to document activities and recommendations Support special projects and continuous improvement initiatives as assigned

Skills and Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health and Safety, Risk Management, Engineering, or related field OR equivalent combination of education and directly related experience

Experience:

Entry-Level:

2+ years of safety, construction, utility, industrial, manufacturing, military, or related operational experience

Mid-Level:

4-7 years of safety experience supporting field operations, construction, utilities, industrial operations, or related environments

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of OSHA regulations and workplace safety practices Understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment, and incident investigation methodologies Ability to conduct field safety observations and inspections Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills Effective verbal and written communication abilities Ability to influence safe behaviors without direct authority Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and reporting systems Ability to interpret policies, procedures, standards, and regulations

Preferred Qualifications:

Certified Safety Professional (CSP) candidate or working toward certification Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), or similar credentials Utility, natural gas, pipeline, construction, contractor management, or energy industry experience Experience conducting safety investigations and root cause analyses Experience with behavior-based safety programs Knowledge of DOT, PHMSA, OSHA, and utility industry safety requirements Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200 certifications

Working Conditions:

Primarily field-based position with frequent travel throughout the service territory Regular exposure to construction sites, utility operations, industrial facilities, and outdoor work environments May be required to work extended hours, nights, weekends, or holidays in support of emergency operations Must be able to walk uneven terrain, climb stairs, access construction sites, and conduct field inspections Requires a valid driver's license and ability to travel to operational locations
