SUMMARY Safety Specialist actively oversees and assumes responsibility for implementation, maintenance, and improvement of the company's safety and environmental compliance programs and procedures.
PRIMARY RESPONSBILITIES
Plan and implement safety policies, trainings, and programs. Advise, lead, and ensure employee compliance regarding all safety-related topics and issues. Monitor the environment and employees to ensure compliance and accountability of individual's actions regarding all safety policies. Provide safety inspections, report findings, and work with management regarding solutions. Conduct, review and document job safety analyses, risk assessments on existing equipment and incoming and/or modified equipment. Assist in the compilation, review, and maintenance of plant safety documentation. Ability to research and compile applicable information for plant specific safety programs and/or projects. Prepare educational and present seminars and trainings on a regular basis. Review existing policies and procedures. Adhere to all the rules and regulations. Conduct accident/ incident and/or violation investigations. Prepare and present reports, determine causes, and advise leadership concerning safety measures. Follow-up on safety related workplace repairs, installations and other work that introduces or exposures hazards to employees until completion. Maintain
OSHA 300
logs, assist in workers compensation case files. Schedules, attends, and supports safety committee meetings. Build and create meeting agendas, records, and distributes minutes along with corrective actions. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Employees within this job should have a min. of a high school diploma or higher education, OSHA 10 or greater certification with additional certs such as Forklift, CPR for CSP cert. Certificate in occupational health and safety is preferred. Experience as a Safety Specialist or similar role. Knowledge of safety legislations and procedures. Excellent knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices. Experience with writing policies and procedures for health and safety. Working knowledge of safety management information system. Outstanding organizational skills. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Good arithmetic skills are required. Mechanical aptitude desired. Working knowledge of measurement instruments. General proficiency of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to communicate orally in a clear, concise and effective manner with, company representatives, management, staff, and the public in face-to-face, one-on-one and group settings. Ability to use a telephone for communication. Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance at the UPC facility in Mt. Airy, NC. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Use office equipment such as a personal computer, copier and facsimile machines. Ability to communicate in writing in a clear, concise and effective manner. Sit, walk, and/or stand for extended time periods. Hearing and vision required to be within normal ranges. Read at, above, and below shoulder height. Work involves lifting materials up to 20 pounds occasionally. Must wear all required personal protective equipment in designated areas and use necessary care to avoid placing self and others in an unsafe environment. Occasionally stoop, kneel or crouch. Sufficient manual dexterity required to operate equipment. Tolerate inclement weather, including excessive heat and cold. Normal range of tolerance to household and other types of typical industrial/ construction chemicals and solvents.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes, chemicals and/or airborne particles, high pressure fluids, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment may be louder. Tolerate inclement weather.
