O'Hare International Airport (ORD) Chicago, IL Job Summary USTechs is hiring a certified Ground Support Equipment (GSE) mechanic to maintain and repair tractors and related ramp equipment at O'Hare International Airport (ORD). This role requires strong hands-on electrical diagnostic and repair experience across DC vehicle electrical systems, battery-electric GSE, and airport ground power equipment, in addition to standard mechanical/diesel repair skills. Key Responsibilities Diagnose, repair, and maintain baggage tractors, pushback tractors, belt loaders, and related GSE. Troubleshoot and repair 12V/24V/48V DC electrical systems, wiring harnesses, starters, alternators, and battery systems. Service and repair battery-electric GSE, including charging systems, battery management systems, and motor controllers. Maintain and troubleshoot ground power units (GPUs) and 400Hz ground power systems. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and DOT/OSHA-required inspections. Complete work orders, parts requisitions, and maintenance records accurately and on time. Respond to on-ramp equipment breakdowns, including outside during Chicago winter conditions. Follow all lockout/tagout, arc flash, and ramp safety protocols. Required Qualifications ASE certification (Electrical/Electronic Systems A6 required; Engine Repair or Diesel preferred). Minimum 3+ years of hands-on GSE, heavy equipment, or diesel/automotive electrical repair experience. Demonstrated experience with DC electrical systems (12V/24V/48V) and wiring diagram troubleshooting. Experience with battery-electric equipment and/or 400Hz ground power units. Valid driver's license; CDL a plus if equipment is towed on public roads. Ability to pass a TSA/airport authority background check (10-year work history, fingerprinting) and obtain a SIDA badge. Ability to complete airport-required AOA/ramp driver training and testing. Own basic hand tools. Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions, including confined spaces under equipment. Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call as ramp operations require. Preferred Qualifications OEM-specific training/certification (TLD, JBT, Global Ground Support, Douglas, Tug Technologies, or similar). EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) certification. Prior experience working on an active airport ramp/AOA. CAN bus / telematics diagnostic experience on modern GSE fleets.
Compensation Target range:
$35.00 - $38.00 per hour ($73,000 - $79,000 annualized), based on experience and certifications. Lead /
Senior Electrical Specialist:
starting at $40.00 per hour, up to $45.00 per hour for candidates with advanced OEM certifications and 7+ years of experience. Final offer depends on experience, certifications held, shift differential, and whether the role falls under a union pay scale (many ORD ground-handling GSE mechanic roles are represented by IAM or a similar union — confirm applicable collective bargaining agreement rates before finalizing an offer). Schedule & Location Full-time. Shift work required, including nights, weekends, and holidays, based on ramp operational needs. Position is based at O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Chicago, IL.
