Body Shop Technician

Job Description

An auto body painter prepares vehicle surfaces, matches paint colors, and applies professional finishes to restore vehicles after collision damage or wear. [1, 2]
Key Responsibilities Surface Preparation:
Sand, grind, clean, and prime metal or plastic panels to create smooth, flawless bases.
Masking:
Cover windows, trim, and unpainted parts with tape and paper to protect them.
Color Matching and Mixing:
Blend and tint paints using specialized formulas and computerized tools to match original factory colors.
Paint Application:
Spray primer, base coats, and clear coats evenly using professional paint guns in a ventilated spray booth.
Inspection and Finishing:
Check finished surfaces for runs, sags, or flaws, and buff or polish the final coat for a high-gloss look.
Equipment Maintenance:
Clean spray guns, maintain paint booths, and keep the workspace safe and tidy. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
Qualifications and Skills Experience:
1 to 5+ years of hands-on experience in auto body repair or paint preparation (certifications from vocational schools or I-CAR can substitute for some experience).
Physical Skills:
Strong hand-eye coordination, steady hands, and good color vision to spot small flaws and shade differences.
Safety Knowledge:
Ability to safely wear protective respirators and handle hazardous chemical vapors in compliance with OSHA rules.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent
Pay:
$22.00 - $30.00 per hour People with a criminal record are encouraged to apply
Experience:
Body Shop Painting:
1 year (Preferred)
License/Certification:
ASE Certified Master Collision (Preferred) Paint and Refinish Specialist (B2) (Preferred)
