This role is critical to ensuring the smooth operation of golf course maintenance through the upkeep of mowers, utility vehicles, sprayers, tractors, and other specialized turf equipment. The majority of the workload will involve diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing turf equipment , so hands-on experience with reel mowers, rotary mowers, and related equipment is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical issues on all turf maintenance equipment, including but not limited to: Reel and rotary mowers Utility carts and transport vehicles Aerators, topdressers, sprayers, and tractors Perform routine preventative maintenance including oil changes, hydraulic system checks, blade sharpening, and reel grinding Maintain service records for each piece of equipment Ensure proper operation and calibration of sprayers and spreaders Maintain a clean and organized shop and safe working environment Track and order parts and supplies as needed Weld, fabricate, and modify equipment as necessary Work closely with the Superintendent and Assistants to prioritize equipment needs and ensure daily maintenance schedules are supported Train equipment operators on proper use and care of machinery when required
Qualifications:
Proven experience as a small engine or turf equipment mechanic (minimum 3 years preferred) Strong understanding of gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems Ability to operate and repair reel grinding machinery Familiarity with John Deere, Toro, Jacobsen, or similar turf brands is highly desirable Ability to read technical manuals and schematics Must be self-motivated, organized, and capable of working independently Valid driver's license High school diploma or equivalent; trade school certification or turf equipment training a plus
Preferred Skills:
Welding and fabrication Equipment fleet management software (e.g. Toro MyTurf, JDLink) Sprayer calibration and GPS-guided equipment familiarity Basic computer skills for service tracking and ordering parts
Work Environment:
Primarily based in the maintenance facility Outdoor work may be required during equipment testing or emergency field repairs Exposure to loud machinery, oil/grease, and occasional heavy lifting
