Job Summary We are seeking a motivated Diesel Mechanic to join our team. In this role, you will maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a diverse fleet of diesel equipment and trucks. Your expertise will be key to minimizing downtime and supporting our shop operations. Responsibilities Accurately document all repairs, labor hours, and parts used on work orders. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with OSHA and shop safety standards. Operate shop equipment safely, including hoists, presses, torches, welders, and diagnostic tools. Troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul heavy-duty diesel engines and sub-assemblies. Repair and replace transmissions, clutches, driveshafts, differentials, and axle assemblies. Inspect, rebuild, and service hydraulic systems (pumps, hoses, valves, and cylinders) on equipment and trailers. Use diagnostic software (e.g., Cummins Insite, Detroit
DDDL, CAT ET
) to troubleshoot fault codes and mechanical failure. Trace and repair complex electrical issues, starting/charging systems, multiplex wiring, and lighting. Diagnose and service modern diesel exhaust/emissions systems (DPF, SCR, DEF, and EGR components). Perform routine preventative maintenance (PMs), including fluid/filter changes, grease jobs, and safety checks. Conduct thorough Certified DOT inspections and complete required compliance documentation. Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, suspensions, wheel ends, and tire conditions.
Skills Engine Rebuilding & Overhauls:
Skilled in performing in-frame and out-of-frame overhauls (piston/liner replacement, cylinder head work, setting valve lash, timing gear alignment).
Heavy Drivetrains:
Expertise in inspecting, servicing, and replacing heavy-duty manual/automated transmissions (Eaton, Allison, Detroit DT12), clutches, torque converters, drivelines, and differential assemblies.
Brakes & Suspensions:
Complete understanding of heavy-duty air brake systems (S-cam, air disc, ABS modules), steering linkages, kingpins, and heavy-duty leaf/air-ride suspensions.
Hydraulic Diagnostics:
Ability to read hydraulic schematics, test system pressures (PSI/flow), and rebuild/replace high-pressure pumps, valve banks, hoses, and cylinders.
Air Systems:
Servicing air compressors, governor valves, air dryers, and brake valves to ensure air-system integrity.
Software Diagnostics:
Hands-on experience with OEM software (Cummins Insite, Detroit
DDDL, CAT
ET, Volvo PTT, Wabco) to pull fault codes, run forced DPF regenerations, and monitor live parameters.
Electrical System Tracing:
Ability to read schematics and use a Digital Multimeter (DMM) to diagnose voltage drops, short circuits, sensor failures, and CAN-bus communication faults.
Aftertreatment & Emissions:
Deep technical knowledge of Tier 4 and modern road emissions systems, including EGR valves, DPF cleaning/rebuilding, SCR catalysts, and DEF dosing units.
Welding & Torch Work:
Proficiency in MIG (GMAW) and Stick (SMAW) welding for frame repairs, cross-member replacements, trailer floor grid repairs, and custom bracket fabrication.
Precision Machining & Fitting:
Operating manual lathes/mills, using precision tools (micrometers, dial indicators) to measure clearances, and executing thread repairs or bolt extractions.
Surface Prep & Refinishing:
Setting up abrasive sandblasting equipment and applying heavy-duty industrial coatings/primers using HVLP spray equipment.
DOT Compliance & Safety:
Thorough knowledge of Federal
DOT/CVSA
inspection criteria to ensure vehicles are safe and compliant before leaving the shop.
Problem-Solving & Efficiency:
Ability to systematically isolate mechanical failures quickly to minimize customer downtime.
Work Order Documentation:
Accurately logging diagnostic findings, parts used, labor hours, and specific repair procedures into shop management systems. Don't meet every single requirement? Apply anyway! Pay:
$40,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
