This position requires a strong mechanical background and the ability to work on complex vehicles incorporating heavy-duty truck, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, fire pump, and specialty emergency-vehicle systems. The Emergency Vehicle Technician / Mechanic is responsible for performing repairs safely, accurately, and efficiently while maintaining the high level of workmanship required for vehicles relied upon for emergency response. EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) and ASE certifications are a plus but are not required. Paid training is provided to help qualified technicians develop their knowledge of fire apparatus and emergency-vehicle systems. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair fire apparatus and emergency vehicles. Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled services. Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic system concerns. Perform chassis and drivetrain repairs. Service and repair diesel engines and related systems. Diagnose starting, charging, lighting, wiring, sensors, modules, and electrical systems. Diagnose and repair air brake and air system components. Perform brake, steering, suspension, wheel-end, and axle repairs. Diagnose and repair cooling and exhaust systems. Service and repair PTOs, generators, and auxiliary equipment. Diagnose and repair hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves, hoses, and related components. Inspect and repair emergency warning lights, sirens, scene lighting, and other emergency equipment. Perform fire pump, valve, plumbing, and pump-control repairs based on experience and training. Assist with aerial-device inspection and repair based on qualifications and training. Perform apparatus refurbishment, component replacement, and equipment installation. Complete welding and fabrication when qualified. Perform operational testing following repairs. Road-test apparatus when required and authorized. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Fire Apparatus Systems Technicians may work with : Diesel engines and drivetrains Automatic transmissions Air brake systems Steering and suspension Electrical and multiplex systems Emergency warning systems Fire pumps and pump controls Water and foam systems Hydraulic systems Aerial devices PTOs and generators Light towers and scene lighting Cab and body systems Compartment doors and hardware Seating and occupant restraint systems HVAC systems Hose reels and auxiliary equipment Experience with every fire apparatus system is not required. We recognize that qualified diesel and heavy-duty technicians may not have previous fire apparatus experience. Paid training is provided to help technicians develop the specialized skills necessary to inspect, diagnose, and repair fire and emergency apparatus. Diagnosis & Troubleshooting Technicians are expected to diagnose problems systematically rather than simply replacing components.

Technicians will:

Verify and duplicate customer concerns when possible. Perform appropriate diagnostic testing. Read wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, air diagrams, and manufacturer service information. Determine the root cause of failures whenever reasonably possible. Communicate additional repair needs before performing work outside the authorized scope. Work with manufacturer technical support when necessary. Verify completed repairs through operational testing. Documentation & Quality Control Technicians are responsible for maintaining accurate Service Order documentation, including: Customer complaint and diagnostic findings. Testing performed. Repairs completed. Parts and materials used. Additional deficiencies discovered. Photographs when required. Accurate labor time. Final operational testing and verification. Documentation should clearly establish what was found, what was done, and how the repair was verified. Technicians are expected to inspect their own work before submitting an apparatus for final quality control. Qualifications Diesel, heavy-truck, fleet, heavy-equipment, automotive, or emergency-vehicle repair experience preferred. Strong mechanical troubleshooting ability. Electrical diagnostic experience preferred. Experience with diesel engines, air brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, or heavy-duty chassis. Ability to use multimeters, scan tools, diagnostic equipment, and standard shop equipment. Ability to read wiring diagrams and technical service information. Basic computer skills. Ability to safely operate hand, pneumatic, and power tools. Valid driver's license. Certifications The following certifications are a plus but are not required: EVT - Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification ASE - Automotive Service Excellence Certification Manufacturer-specific certifications and training CDL Technicians without EVT or ASE certifications who have strong mechanical experience and demonstrate the ability and willingness to learn fire apparatus systems are encouraged to apply. Our Standard Fire apparatus are not ordinary commercial vehicles. Our customers rely on these vehicles during emergencies where reliability and safety are critical. A repair is not complete simply because the original complaint appears to be corrected. The technician must verify the repair, identify related safety concerns, properly document the work, and ensure the apparatus is ready for final quality control. Our goal is to repair the apparatus correctly, safely, and efficiently and return a dependable emergency vehicle to the customer.
