Job Description:
The Facilities Department of Nassau Community College (NCC) is seeking an Automotive Mechanic to perform skilled work in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment throughout the campus. Under direct supervision, the position requires mechanical skill and the use of judgment, and the work is reviewed for quality, accuracy, and completeness. In addition, the Automotive Mechanic will: Perform skilled repair work on gasoline and diesel powered automobiles, trucks, sweepers, heavy equipment, and other automotive equipment. Repair, overhaul, or replace transmissions, valves, clutches, brakes, generators, ignition systems, and other automotive parts and equipment. Perform limited body and painting work. Perform periodic inspections and tune up equipment to ensure proper functioning. Perform emergency road service. Maintain records and prepares reports on work accomplished. Use acetylene and arc-welding equipment, as required.
Requirements:
The Automotive Mechanic should have: Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, and equipment used in automotive repair and maintenance. Knowledge of principles of operation and maintenance of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines. Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment employed in repairing and adjusting automotive equipment. Ability to locate, diagnose, and repair defects and malfunctions in automotive equipment. Ability to make minor welds and to use acetylene cutting tools. Ability to maintain simple records and to follow oral and written instructions. Minimum qualifications include graduation from high school AND four (4) years of satisfactory experience in the skilled repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, or other automotive equipment; OR completion of eighth grade education AND six (6) years of experience, as outlined above.
Necessary Special Requirement:
Continuing possession of an appropriate class, valid Driver License issued by the State of New York.
Additional Information:
The Automotive Mechanic position is a Grade 9, non-competitive Civil Service title. The starting salary is $38,977 per year. After one (1) year, salary will increase to $57,585. Benefits include NYS retirement plan, health, dental, optical insurance, vacation, sick, and personal leave. Candidate must be a current resident of Nassau County for at least one (1) year.
