Lead Diesel & Equipment Mechanic Location:
Mountain View, CA Employment Type:
Full-Time Position Overview We are looking for a highly skilled A-Tech Diesel & Equipment Mechanic to manage and service our diverse fleet of 15 vehicles and around 30 machines. Based in Mountain View, our team operates a varied light-to-heavy truck fleet (pickup trucks, service bodies, dump trucks) alongside compact and medium and heavy construction machinery. As our primary technician, you will be responsible for diagnostic, repair, and preventative maintenance operations to ensure minimal job-site downtime and full DOT compliance. We have a service truck equipped with a crane and will soon be building a shop with a dedicated service bay. We currently have two other technicians who assist with parts runs, routine service work, and general support, allowing this position to focus primarily on more challenging repairs and projects. This role will also be responsible for coordinating their work, managing task assignments, and maintaining organized records of completed services and upcoming projects. The ideal candidate will be interested in eventually growing into a broader supervisory role—helping us develop the service department, improve its systems, and train future technicians as the company continues to grow.
Perform complex diagnostic testing, electrical troubleshooting, and bumper-to-bumper mechanical repairs on light, medium, and heavy-duty diesel trucks.
Equipment Service:
Inspect, service, and repair hydraulic systems, diesel engines, transmissions, and undercarriages on construction equipment (skid steers, mini-excavators, loaders). Preventative Maintenance (PM): Implement scheduled PM programs for all 20 fleet vehicles and machinery to maximize uptime and extend equipment lifespan.
Compliance & Inspection:
Conduct safety inspections and ensure all vehicles comply with California Air Resources Board (CARB) mandates, DOT safety requirements, and local regulations. BIT inspection certificate desired.
Emergency Field Repairs:
Respond to occasional job-site breakdowns to perform mobile repairs or coordinate towing when necessary.
Inventory & Record Keeping:
Track work orders, document parts used, and maintain accurate maintenance logs using our fleet management system.
Qualifications & Requirements Experience:
Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic or heavy equipment technician (A-Tech level equivalent).
Technical Skills:
Strong background in hydraulic systems, 12V/24V electrical troubleshooting, diesel emissions systems (DEF/DPF), and multiplexing systems.
Certifications:
ASE Diesel Certifications (T-series) or factory-equivalent certifications strongly preferred. Valid California Driver's License (Class A or Class B CDL preferred).
Physical & Logistics:
Ability to lift up to 75 lbs, work in physical field/shop environments, and travel to local Mountain View/Bay Area job sites for mobile service calls.
Tooling:
Must possess a comprehensive set of personal hand/power tools appropriate for heavy diesel and equipment service.
Pay & Benefits Salary Range:
Competitive Bay Area rates ($45.00 - $55.00+ / hour, depending on experience and CDL/ASE qualifications).
Benefits:
Full health/dental/vision coverage, paid time off (PTO), 401(k) with company match, and tool allowance (possible).
Pay:
$45.00 - $55.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
