Position Summary
The Bus Mechanic II (Certified Bus Mechanic) is the advanced, certified level within the District's bus mechanic career progression. The position independently performs advanced and complex maintenance, diagnostics, inspections, and repairs on District school buses, trucks, vans, automobiles, grounds maintenance equipment, and other fleet vehicles and equipment.
The position diagnoses complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, and computerized vehicle systems; performs major and safety-critical repairs; conducts required vehicle and school bus inspections; and evaluates vehicle safety and operational readiness in accordance with District, state, and federal requirements. The position exercises advanced technical judgment and works with a high degree of independence.
Serves as a technical resource to Bus Mechanic I employees and other Transportation staff by providing technical guidance related to diagnostics, repair procedures, inspections, and skill development. The position does not have formal supervisory responsibility unless specifically assigned.
Essential Job Functions
Independently performs scheduled and unscheduled preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on District school buses, trucks, vans, automobiles, trailers, grounds maintenance equipment, and other fleet vehicles and equipment.
Determines appropriate diagnostic and repair approaches for complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, air brake, drivetrain, and computerized vehicle systems.
Performs advanced troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of complex and major vehicle and equipment systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications, industry standards, and applicable District, state, and federal requirements.
Utilizes computerized and electronic diagnostic equipment to identify vehicle faults, determine appropriate repairs, and verify completed repairs.
Reads and interprets technical manuals, manufacturer service information, electrical schematics, diagnostic data, specifications, and repair procedures to diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment systems.
Performs required school bus and vehicle inspections in accordance with District procedures and applicable state and regulatory requirements.
Evaluates vehicle and equipment condition, identifies safety-critical defects, determines required corrective action, and determines whether vehicles and equipment are safe for return to service.
Troubleshoots, services, and repairs hydraulic and air brake systems and other safety-critical vehicle systems.
Responds to road and emergency service calls involving disabled or malfunctioning District vehicles and equipment, including during adverse weather and other challenging conditions.
Prioritizes and coordinates repair activities based on safety, operational needs, vehicle availability, and service requirements to minimize disruptions to Transportation operations.
Completes work orders and maintains accurate records of inspections, diagnostics, repairs, labor, parts, materials, and vehicle and equipment condition in the District's computerized maintenance management system.
Coordinates with fleet maintenance staff and the Transportation parts purchaser to identify parts and materials needed for repairs and support appropriate inventory levels.
Provides technical guidance to Bus Mechanic I employees and other Transportation staff regarding diagnostics, repair procedures, inspections, troubleshooting, and safe work practices.
Demonstrates and provides technical assistance related to maintenance, repair, diagnostic, inspection, and safety procedures.
Provides technical assistance to school bus drivers, vehicle operators, and other Transportation staff regarding vehicle operation and mechanical concerns.
Maintains tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, organized, and professional condition.
Maintains required licenses, certifications, and inspection credentials and remains current on applicable technical, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Collaborates with mechanics, drivers, equipment operators, supervisors, vendors, and other District staff to support safe and reliable fleet operations.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Required:
High School Diploma or GED
Specialized coursework, technical education, apprenticeship, or training in automotive, diesel, truck, bus, or heavy-equipment maintenance and repair
Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience servicing and repairing light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles, including trucks and/or buses.
Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record as required by District policy
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Heavy Duty Truck and/or Bus certification(s)
Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or ability to obtain the required CDL within six (6) months of appointment
Department of Transportation Brake Inspector Certificate, Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Inspector Certificate, and Opacity Inspector License, or ability to obtain required credentials within twelve (12) to eighteen (18) months of appointment.
Maintain all licenses and certifications required to perform assigned duties
Preferred
Associate degree or technical certificate in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, Heavy-Duty Equipment Maintenance, or a related field.
Additional ASE certifications beyond those required for the position.
Experience maintaining and repairing school buses or other large fleet vehicles in a school district, municipal, governmental, or commercial fleet environment.
Experience providing technical guidance, mentoring, or training to other mechanics or maintenance staff.
Experience with computerized fleet maintenance management systems and advanced vehicle diagnostic technologies.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
Work is performed primarily in a vehicle maintenance shop environment and may also occur outdoors, at District schools and facilities, along roadways, or at other locations where District vehicles and equipment require service. Employees may be exposed to varying weather conditions, vehicle exhaust, fumes, odors, oils, fuels, lubricants, chemicals, dust, dirt, noise, vibration, moving mechanical equipment, and other conditions associated with vehicle maintenance and repair.
Work may include emergency service calls and duties performed outdoors during adverse weather conditions. Employees must meet applicable physical and regulatory requirements associated with operating District commercial vehicles.
Essential functions include performing physically demanding vehicle maintenance, inspection, diagnostic, and repair activities. The position requires standing and walking for extended periods and regularly bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, grasping, turning, and working in, under, and around vehicles and equipment.
Physical requirements include lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds and safely moving, positioning, installing, or removing vehicle components, tools, equipment, and materials necessary to perform assigned duties. The position may also require climbing stairs or ladders and operating hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, computers, and other maintenance equipment.
The position requires effective communication and the ability to receive and process information through vision, hearing, or other assisted means. Employees must be able to identify environmental and mechanical cues necessary to safely inspect, diagnose, and repair vehicles and equipment.

Non-Recurring Pay:
8% of base salary in Non-Recurring Pay (distributed as 4% on November paycheck and 4 % on May paycheck).
Base Salary Setting:
Employment, assignment and salary placement, is in accordance with job description requirements. A work history is required to demonstrate job title, job duties and time worked in the position. Grade placement for ESP positions is determined by the Salary Schedule by Job Title resource.

Salary Setting (New Hires): Any newly-employed Education Support Professional will be placed on the twenty-five (25) step system. Each step represents two years of experience, based upon equivalent experience. The maximum number of years of experience granted is 19-20 years, which is equivalent to placement on step ten (10). Steps are determined by experience listed on the application and resume.
Salary Setting (Rehires): Returning employees who have previously resigned or separated from the District will be rehired at the same step they were on at the time of resignation/separation plus any new experience gained in the same job, provided step increases were approved by the Board during the years in question. Employees with experience in the District who have left the District and then returned to the same position shall be hired at the same pay grade (refers to the ESP placement on salary schedule by job title) and step at time of resignation. Additional relevant experience gained after resignation may be evaluated from the employee's application and updated resume.
