The Mechanical Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing diesel engines, trucks, and heavy-duty equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and DOT-compliant fleet operations. This role performs mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and engine diagnostics, completes preventative maintenance and inspections, and responds to equipment breakdowns to minimize downtime. The Mechanical Technician also interprets technical documentation, maintains accurate repair records, supports special projects, and promotes a safe, organized work environment.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair diesel engines, trucks, trailers, and heavy-duty equipment. Perform mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and welding repairs as needed. Complete preventative maintenance (PM) services and DOT inspections. Respond to emergency and unscheduled equipment breakdowns to minimize downtime. Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, service documentation, and repair procedures. Operate, inspect, and maintain shop tools, diagnostic equipment, and machinery. Follow all company safety policies, regulatory requirements, and quality standards. Accurately document repairs, inspections, maintenance activities, and service records. Utilize hand tools, power tools, material handling equipment, welders, and cutting torches safely and effectively. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment. Assist team members with maintenance activities, special projects, and operational needs. Perform additional duties as assigned. Education & Preferred Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of two years of experience as a diesel mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic. Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, mechanical repairs, and welding. Experience troubleshooting and repairing heavy-duty trucks and equipment. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service documentation. Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Self-motivated with the ability to multitask and work independently or as part of a team. Valid driver's license with a good driving record required. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred.
Physical & Mental Demands:
Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and handling of tools, equipment, and materials. Frequent use of hand and power tools while performing mechanical repairs and inspections. Occasional climbing, kneeling, crawling, and lifting or moving materials and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds. Ability to diagnose mechanical issues, follow detailed repair procedures, and communicate effectively with team members. May require operation of company vehicles, forklifts, heavy equipment, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in indoor shop, outdoor, and field environments. Frequent exposure to loud noise, machinery, diesel equipment, chemicals, varying weather conditions, and confined work areas. Travel may be required as needed to support equipment repairs or operational needs. First-shift position with mandatory overtime based on business and production demands. Required personal protective equipment includes steel-toe boots, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and welding mask when performing applicable work.
