Generator Power Technician

Job Description

Job Summary Generator Technician to perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of residential and light commercial standby power systems on various manufactures and models of generator sets up to 200KW. Incumbent will work independently in the field to ensure customer backup power systems operate at peak performance during annual stress test using load banks. Repairs coolant systems, exhaust, ignition, and controls. Equipment ages range from new to 20+ years. Technician must have a good understanding of generator operations and electron flow in a stationary combustion engine. Hands-on position with potential for training others and growth into management position.
Key Responsibilities Diagnostics & Repair:
Troubleshoot equipment components including alternators, wiring harnesses safety devices, shutdown switches, and battery systems. Apply proper engine technical skills in inspection, disassembly, failure analysis, assembly, diagnosis, and engine operating performance tests. Identify the problem and cause of failure through logical troubleshooting step Determine corrective action through inspection of failed parts.
Electrical Systems:
Inspect, test, and repair Automatic Transfer Switches, low/medium voltage switchgear, and advanced generator controls.
Maintenance:
Execute routine and advanced preventative maintenance, load bank testing, and system commissioning.
Documentation:
Complete precise field service reporting on generator sets serviced and repaired.
Field Leadership:
Support junior technicians and deliver stellar customer service.
Qualifications & Skills Experience:
5+ years of hands-on field experience servicing residential and light commercial power generation systems.
Education:
High school diploma or GED. Technical/vocational certification or military power generation background preferred.
Excellent Communication and Problem-Solving skills:
Communicate with customers and junior technicians in a clear and understanding tone. Ability to understand and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
Certifications:
Manufacturer-specific training (e.g., Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Winco) or EGSA certification is a strong plus.
Physical & Travel:
Ability to lift 75 lbs., work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and travel regionally up to 5% of the time. Generators are mostly local, no extended or continuous out of town travel.
Driver's License:
Valid North Carolina driver's license and safe driving record is required.
Compensation Pay Rate:
Competitive hourly pay ranging from $30.00 to $47.00 per hour (commensurate with experience) with occasional overtime (1.5x).
