Position Summary The Fleet Mechanic keeps Pipe & Plant's trucks, CCTV vans, and specialty equipment — pumps, cameras, jetters, and recyclers — in peak operating condition. This role anticipates wear and schedules preventive service before breakdowns occur, diagnoses and resolves mechanical issues correctly the first time, and ensures every vehicle leaves the yard safe and job-ready. The ideal candidate treats the fleet like their own, takes pride in a clean and organized shop, and communicates proactively with supervisors and field crews on repair status, costs, and schedule impacts. 2. Key Responsibilities Equipment Reliability & Preventive Maintenance Anticipates wear and schedules preventive service before breakdowns occur, keeping the fleet job-ready and minimizing costly downtime. Builds and follows a preventive maintenance schedule covering oil, hydraulics, electrical systems, CCTV equipment, and high-pressure pumps. Documents inspections and maintenance history for every unit. Tracks wear items (hoses, nozzles, seals, tires) and replaces them proactively. Technical Expertise & Repairs Quickly identifies the root cause of mechanical issues, communicates repair options clearly, and executes repairs correctly the first time. Applies skilled knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and sewer cleaning equipment. Stays current with new technology, including recycler systems, digital CCTV, and hybrid engines. Confidently moves and tests a variety of equipment in the yard, ensuring readiness for mobilization and demobilization. Welding experience is a plus. Safety & Compliance Ensures all repairs meet CHP BIT, DOT, OSHA, and manufacturer standards, with no cutting corners. Models perfect compliance with all shop safety protocols and sets the standard for the team. Immediately addresses or reports hazards and flags unsafe conditions before equipment leaves the yard. Cost Control Spots opportunities to lower operating costs — such as sourcing parts more efficiently, recommending repair-versus-replace decisions, or adjusting maintenance intervals — and clearly presents recommendations to supervisors. Manages parts inventory smartly, keeping critical spares on hand without overstocking. Prevents repeat repairs and warranty issues; balances vendor use versus in-house work to control costs. Support to Operations & Communication Gets trucks and CCTV vans out the door ready for production every morning. Keeps supervisors and field crews updated on equipment status, repair timelines, cost-saving ideas, and any potential schedule impacts. Understands that every repair directly impacts project schedules and revenue. Accountability & Teamwork Takes ownership of the fleet, treating every vehicle as if it were their own. Maintains a spotless, well-stocked, and organized shop and yard. Trains operators on daily inspections and proper equipment care to reduce wear and damage. 3. Qualifications Proven experience as a diesel/fleet mechanic, ideally with heavy trucks, vacuum trucks, or sewer cleaning equipment. Strong working knowledge of hydraulics, electrical systems, and high-pressure pump systems. Familiarity with CCTV inspection systems and recycler technology a plus. Working knowledge of CHP BIT, DOT, and OSHA compliance standards. Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with dispatch, fleet management, and field crews. Valid driver's license; CDL preferred. 4. Compensation & Classification Pay range: $40-$55 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Classification:

Non-exempt (overtime-eligible) position. 5. Physical Requirements Ability to lift, move, and operate heavy equipment and parts. Ability to work in a shop and outdoor yard environment in varying weather conditions. Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces as needed for repairs.

Pay:

$45.00 - $55.00 per hour
