We are currently seeking a highly skilled and dependable Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our CA State Parks - Oceano Dunes district team. This role is essential in ensuring that all district vehicles and equipment are inspected, maintained, and repaired to operate safely and efficiently. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical expertise, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and service excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Equipment Maintenance & Repair Inspect and diagnose issues with district vehicles and heavy equipment. Maintain and repair automobiles, trucks, tractors, graders, air compressors, pumps, and both diesel and gasoline engines. Operate heavy equipment, 2WD/4WD vehicles, and ATVs for diagnostic purposes. Modify or construct specialized equipment; perform installations and repairs. Operate and maintain shop tools and machinery used for heavy equipment repair. Perform minor welding and brazing; advise on parts and equipment selection. Represent the department in a professional and accurate manner during public and agency interactions. Fleet & Equipment Management Ensure all repairs meet fleet authorization standards and are completed on schedule. Coordinate with DGS Fleet Auto Inspector to maintain regulatory compliance. Support planning for vehicle and equipment replacements (Schedule 9). Maintain detailed and accurate records of fleet repairs and maintenance. Track and manage inventory of tools, supplies, and parts. Maintain an organized, safe, and clean workspace; assist in training staff on vehicle operation. Administrative Support Prepare purchasing documents, gather bids, and submit reports in a timely and accurate manner. Collaborate with district administrative personnel on procurement and contracts. Complete reports, time sheets, and other documentation as assigned. Participate in regular staff meetings and safety briefings. Assist in training seasonal staff on administrative and operational procedures. Safety & Compliance Attend and engage in safety ("tailgate") meetings and training sessions. Use and enforce proper safety gear and protocols at all times. Maintain work areas and tools according to safety and cleanliness standards. Follow correct procedures for chemical handling and waste disposal. Respond to safety hazards and incidents promptly and appropriately. Stay current on required certifications, safety procedures, and training.

Minimum Qualifications:

Hands-on experience in heavy equipment and automotive maintenance and repair. Knowledge of engine diagnostics, hydraulics, electrical systems, and mechanical components. Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, safety regulations, and technical instructions. Valid driver's license; CDL preferred or required based on equipment use. Strong organizational and communication skills. Welding and fabrication experience a plus.
