Job Description

Heavy Equipment Mechanic/Mechanic's Assistant As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic/Mechanic's Assistant, you will be responsible for the health, safety, and uptime of our fleet. Whether you are a seasoned "wrench" or an eager-to-learn assistant, your role is vital in ensuring our dozers, excavators, service trucks, tractor trailers, and other heavy equipment stay on the job site and out of the shop.
Responsibilities Maintenance & Repair:
Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and complex repairs on heavy machinery, including dozers, loaders, and excavators.
Diagnostics:
Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, and engine systems to identify and resolve mechanical failures.
Field Support:
Respond to on-site equipment breakdowns to perform emergency repairs in a timely manner.
Fabrication:
Utilize welding or cutting tools for equipment reinforcement or minor structural repairs.
Documentation:
Maintain accurate logs of all services, parts used, and repairs completed to track fleet health.
Safety:
Adhere to all shop and site safety protocols, ensuring a clean and hazard-free work environment.
Qualifications Technical Mindset:
Strong mechanical aptitude and a professional focus on quality, efficiency, and safety.
Reliability:
Must be punctual, work independently with minimal supervision, and maintain a positive attitude.
Driver Standards:
Must have a clean driving record for the last 5 years.
Compliance:
Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen (this includes marijuana per our insurance provider's requirements).
Certifications:
CDL or relevant technical certifications are preferred but NOT required. We distinguish between the Mechanic and Mechanic's Assistant roles based primarily on field experience and technical independence:
Mechanic's Assistant:
Experience:
0-3 years; entry-level or trade school
Autonomy:
Works under direct supervision; performs basic maintenance (oil changes, etc.)
Tooling:
Basic hand tools required.
Skill Set:
Focus on oil changes, parts runs, greasing, and tires.
Mechanic:
Experience:
4+ years of hands-on diesel/heavy repair
Autonomy:
Works independently under head mechanic; manages complex teardowns
Tooling:
Full professional set of tools and diagnostic gear
Skill Set:
Focus on hydraulics, electronics, and engines. Haynes Excavation offers year-round work with no layoffs in the slower/winter months. Pay will be based on experience and your specific classification.
Job Type:
Full-time Pay:
$20.00 - $30.00 per hour
