Class Description The Employee in this class will be qualified in Heavy Duty Truck Mechanics and under the supervision of the Shop Working Foremen. Examples of Work The Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy equipment and vehicles used by the Road Commission. This position ensures all fleet vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, and operating efficiently to support road maintenance, construction, and winter operations. CDL A required to operate service truck.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on heavy-duty trucks, construction equipment, and road maintenance machinery. Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic issues on diesel and gasoline engines. Repair and maintain equipment including dump trucks, snowplows, graders, loaders, excavators, and other road maintenance vehicles. Maintain and repair braking systems, transmissions, steering systems, and suspensions. Operate diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot issues. Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records. Ensure compliance with safety regulations and departmental procedures. Maintain a clean and organized shop environment. Knowledge and Skills Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics. Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, and hydraulics. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities. Must be able to comprehend, process, and apply written and verbal information, instruction, and directives.

Ability to walk extended distances and climb stairs or ramps to access Commission and other work related locations and facilities. Vision and Sight
Ability to read instructions, directions, and similar written information in letters, memoranda, forms and other documents. Hearing/Speaking
Ability to converse orally with standard telephones and radios to receive and communicate information to employees and the public. Agility/Movement
Ability to lift, push, pull, and manipulate tools, equipment, supplies, and other objects often weighing upwards to 100 pound.
Ability to maneuver in, under and over vehicles and equipment. Experience Three years of experience as a heavy truck and construction equipment mechanic. Experience in engine electronics on modern equipment desirable. Prefer experience repairing vehicles over 10,000 pounds G.V.W., gasoline & diesel engine repair, air brake systems and a strong knowledge of electrical systems Michigan or ASE Certification Engine Repair-Diesel and Gas, Brakes and Braking Systems-Hydraulic and Air, Suspension and Steering Systems, Electrical and Drive Train. Michigan Department of State Motor Vehicle Mechanic Certificate with the Master Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic Certification CDL Class A with air brakes
