Job Description

Motor Equipment Mechanic Distinguishing Features of the
Class :
Work involves the diagnosis and repair of automotive and large motorized equipment. Some supervision may be exercised over helpers or others. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities:
Repairs engines, transmissions, rear ends in large and small trucks, cars, construction equipment and other equipment malfunctions; Operates machine shop equipment as needed, including lathes, welders, planers, grinders, drill presses, boring bar and other metal working machines to make and repair parts for motorized and automotive equipment; Compiles and maintains records associated with garage work; Diagnose problems with gas and diesel engines; transmissions and other malfunctions; Perform minor body work; Operate heavy equipment; Makes estimates and prepare requisitions for parts and materials. Full Performance knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics: Good knowledge of techniques, tools, terminology, and safety precautions used in the repair of automotive and large motorized equipment. Good knowledge of the operation of large and small trucks, cars, construction, and other motor equipment. Skilled in operating machine shop equipment. Ability to diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, rear ends in large and small trucks, cars and construction and other equipment and other malfunctions. Ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions. Ability to lay out work for self and others. Ability to keep records, good motor and hand and eye coordination, manual dexterity. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work well with others and communicate effectively, mechanical aptitude, sound judgement, initiative, resourcefulness, and integrity. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications :
Graduation from a high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years' experience as a journeyman mechanic or equivalent and; Possession of a CDL-B license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and maintain same throughout employment.
