As a Juab County employee, you will play an important role in maintaining the equipment used for roads, and the land fill. Position Summary The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and servicing of Juab County's fleet of heavy equipment, vehicles, and related machinery. This position helps ensure county equipment remains safe, dependable, and available when needed. The ideal candidate is someone who takes pride in their work, has strong mechanical skills, can diagnose problems effectively, and is committed to maintaining equipment to a high standard. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair heavy equipment, vehicles, and machinery. Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing. Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and other equipment-related problems. Repair and maintain engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and other components. Perform oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, fluid checks, and other routine maintenance. Maintain accurate records of inspections, implement a work order system for repairs, parts, and maintenance activities. Identify equipment problems before they become major repairs or safety concerns. Assist with emergency and unscheduled repairs when county operations require immediate equipment availability. Operate diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and other shop equipment as appropriate and efficiently. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area. Follow applicable safety standards, county policies, and manufacturer recommendations. Coordinate with supervisors and county departments Dayle regarding equipment condition, repairs, and maintenance needs. Assist with maintaining an accurate inventory of parts, supplies, and equipment. May assist with seasonal preparation and maintenance of snow removal, road maintenance, and other public works equipment. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. Equipment You May Work On Depending on county operations, all Road Department equipment may include: Heavy construction equipment Dump trucks Motor graders Loaders Excavators Backhoes Snow removal equipment Road maintenance equipment Pickup trucks and other county vehicles Trailers and related equipment Small engines and miscellaneous powered equipment Transporting Equipment Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience 5 years minimum repairing and maintaining heavy equipment, trucks, automotive equipment, or similar machinery. Working knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, engines, and related equipment. Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate repairs. Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop equipment. Ability to work independently and manage multiple maintenance and repair priorities. Valid Utah driver's license or ability to obtain one. Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position. Preferred Qualifications 5 years experience as a heavy equipment, diesel, fleet, or automotive mechanic. Experience working on diesel engines and heavy construction equipment. Welding and fabrication experience. Experience with hydraulic and electrical troubleshooting. CDL or must obtain a CDL in 6 mounts. Formal technical training or certification in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment repair, automotive technology, or a related field. Experience working for a municipality, county, construction company, road department, or similar organization. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The successful candidate should demonstrate: Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills. Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship. Ability to read and understand service manuals, technical information, and equipment specifications. Keep a clean and safe working environment keep tools organized and put away Juab County will supply specialty tools for the shop. Ability to prioritize repairs based on safety, operational needs, and available resources. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Dependability, accountability, and a strong work ethic. Ability to work effectively as part of a Juab County Road department team. Commitment to workplace safety. Willingness to learn new technology, equipment, and repair techniques. Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to perform physical work associated with equipment maintenance and repair, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting, pushing, pulling, and working in confined or difficult-to-access areas. The position may require working outdoors and in varying weather conditions. Work Environment The Heavy Equipment Mechanic may work in a county maintenance facility, equipment shop, and outdoor work environments. The position may occasionally require work outside of normal business hours, including during emergencies, severe weather, snow removal operations, or other situations requiring county equipment to remain operational.
