Job Description

HVAC Mechanic Helper

Reports to:

HVAC Supervisor

Department:

Energy Management

Pay Grade

M 4 @ 260 days

Primary Purpose:

To become a worthy employee of the district by safely and adequately performing duties associated with cooling, heating, venting, and humidity control.

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or GED

Must have a valid Texas Driver's License

Post High School vocational training in HVAC & Refrigeration Technology EPA approved Certification Type I & II (universal preferred)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language

Must have enough command of the English language to effectively make oral and/or written presentations on activities related to his/her job responsibility

Be able to communicate using modern communication technology (telephone, two-way radio, etc. Basic computer skills in the operation of personal computers or display terminals

Basic knowledge of building repair and maintenance procedures Basic skills in human relations

Experience:

At least one year of outstanding performance while working for a reputable company which specializes or is closely related to the job responsibilities as listed in the job description

    Technical Skills, Responsibilities and Duties
    In PSJA ISD, we hire individuals who demonstrate excellence in these technical areas as they lead others
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Mount compressor and condenser units on platform or floor following blueprints or specifications.
  • Installs ductwork and chassis parts.
  • Installs evaporator unit.
  • Cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape.
  • Cuts and threads pipe.
  • Joins tubing or pipers to HVAC units by means of sleeves, couplings, or unions, and solders joints using torch.
  • Installs expansion and discharge valves.
  • Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and circulating-ventilation fans to control panels to power source.
  • Installs air and water filters
  • Injects small amount of refrigerant into compressor to test systems.
  • Adds Freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure.
  • Observes pressure and vacuum gages and adjusts controls to insure proper operation.
  • Tests joints and connections for gas leaks using gages or soap-and-water solution.
  • Wraps pipes in insulation batting and secures them in place with cement or wire bands.
  • Replaces defective beaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units.
  • Dismantles whole or part of machine, as indicated by type of malfunction and replaces such parts as switches, relays, fan motors, thermostats, and other components.
  • Replaces filters, lubricates unit, and adjusts controls.

Installs and repairs refrigerating systems: lays out reference points for installation; drills holes and installs brackets and hangers into floor or wall; lifts and aligns components into position using hoist and anchors in place; welds , and braces parts to assemble structural and functional components, such as motors, controls, switches, gages, wiring harnesses, valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, cores, and pipes; pumps specified gas or fluid into system; starts system; observes system, reads gages and instruments, and adjusts mechanism.

Determines need, extent and timing of water treatment program; and applies or designates someone to apply chemicals accordingly.

May monitor and adjust equipment operation.

Installs, services, and repairs air-conditioning units.

Cuts and shapes fiberglass sheet to form heating and air conditioning ducts, using hand tools.

Assists plumbers in installing, testing, adjusting, and repairing regulators, ranges, and heaters.

Transports tools, parts, equipment, and appliances as needed

Calibrates and repairs pneumatic thermostats.

Services refrigerators, ice makers, freezers, air conditioning units, water fountains, and heating boilers.

Performs any other duties as assigned.

May need to work a flexible schedule depending on District Demand.

Moderate standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions

Lifting:

Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis

Environment:

Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours
