Job Description
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory seeks a Telescope Mechanic II-III to maintain and repair complex radio telescope systems supporting world-class astronomy research. In this on-site role, you will perform preventive and corrective maintenance on large antenna structures, drive systems, and mechanical subassemblies, ensuring precise, reliable operation for observing schedules. Responsibilities include troubleshooting mechanical and electromechanical issues, interpreting technical drawings, using precision measurement tools, and documenting work in maintenance systems. You will collaborate closely with engineers, technicians, and scientists in a mission-driven, safety-focused environment that values curiosity, rigor, and continuous learning while working with cutting-edge instrumentation and contributing directly to groundbreaking scientific discovery. Responsibilities Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on radio telescope mechanical systems and subassemblies Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electromechanical issues Assist with installation, alignment, and calibration of telescope structures and drive mechanisms Interpret engineering drawings, manuals, and schematics to execute repairs and upgrades Document maintenance activities, parts usage, and system status in maintenance systems Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and scientists to support observing schedules Follow and promote strict safety procedures when working at heights and with heavy equipment Participate in continuous improvement, reliability, and upgrade projects for telescope systems Required Skills Mechanical systems maintenance Precision alignment and calibration Hydraulic and pneumatic systems Electromechanical troubleshooting Reading technical schematics Use of precision measurement tools Preventive maintenance planning Industrial safety procedures Basic PLC or control systems familiarity Documentation and maintenance reporting
