Job Type Full Time Position Description Senior Park Maintenance Specialist 2026 Bulletin.pdf (PDF, 301KB) (PDF, 301KB) The Position The City of San Fernando is seeking an experienced and responsible professional to become a full-time Senior Park Maintenance Specialist in our Public Works Department. Under general supervision, to direct a crew and perform a variety of skilled work in the landscape maintenance of parks and other municipal properties; and perform related work as required. Important & Essential Duties Directs, trains, and participates in landscape maintenance for parks and municipal properties, including irrigation, fertilization, planting, grounds cleaning, litter removal, irrigation system repair, field renovation. And pesticide application. Operates and maintains a wide range of landscaping equipment and City vehicles, including mowers, sprayers, tractors, backhoes, skip loaders, trenchers and light/heavy-duty trucks. Maintains athletic fields, trees, shrubs, lawns, and other public landscapes using hand tools and power equipment for trimming, pruning, and general upkeep. Promotes worksite safety by setting up traffic control and warning devices for jobsites and special events, while preparing and maintain required reports and documentation. Assists in the prevention of vandalism and facility abuse. Performs general maintenance and construction tasks, including rough carpentry, cement work, and sidewalk repairs. Assists with inspections of play equipment to assure safe operation. Assists supervisors in the review of landscape and irrigation plans. Provides the public with information regarding the proper use of City parks, facilities, and programs. Responds to emergency calls.

Job Related & Special Qualifications Ability To:

Safely perform landscape maintenance using a wide variety of hand tools, power equipment, and specialized grounds maintenance machinery. Follow and provide written and verbal instructions while applying department policies, procedures, and safety regulations. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, maintaining accurate records and preparing reports. Work effectively in diverse environments, including holidays, weekends, after-hours assignments, and varying outdoor weather conditions. Build and maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, coworkers and public while demonstrating flexibility, teamwork and sound judgement to support safe, efficient and effective maintenance operations.

Knowledge of:

Landscape maintenance, irrigation systems and grounds care practices. Building cleaning and maintenance procedures. Applicable safety rules, practices, and procedures.

Experience & Training Guidelines Experience:

Five years of experience in general landscape maintenance work; or equivalent combination of training and experience is required.

Training:

Graduation from high school or equivalent is required and five years of experience in general landscape maintenance work; or equivalent combination of training and experience is required. Experience in a public agency is preferred.

Special Requirements:

Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance program are required. California Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicator Certificate and/or License are highly desired.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, twist, climb and lift about 100 lbs.; may be exposed to sun, and work under high and low temperatures (mostly between 40 and 90 degrees); may be exposed to toxic/poisonous substances, slippery surfaces and frequent loud noises.

Compensation & Benefits Annual Salary:

$63,420 - $78,552

RETIREMENT:

California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), 2%@55 formulas for classic members and 2%@62 for Classic members PEPRA members. All are integrated with Social Security.

INSURANCE

Cafeteria Plan with monthly flex dollar allowance to apply towards offered medical, dental, and vision plans for employee and eligible dependents. City pays for $50,000 term life/AD&D insurance policy. Additional voluntary purchase available, with no medical questions asked.

VACATION

Ranges from 10 days (80 hours) to 20 days (160 hours) depending on years of service.

SICK LEAVE

12 days per year. Partial payment of unused accumulated sick leave (over 800 hours).

HOLIDAYS

13 days per year.

BILINGUAL PAY

$100 per month upon passing bilingual (Spanish language) exam.

FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNT

Voluntary program available to help with out-of-pocket healthcare and dependent care expenses.

LONGEVITY PAY

SFPEA members receive an additional 3% after 10 YOS; a total of 4% after 20 YOS; and a total of 5% after 30 YOS.

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT

Up to $3,000 per fiscal year for approved courses.

EDUCATION INCENTIVE

2% Above base salary for a bachelor's degree and additional 2% for master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
