Job Description

The Town of Bar Harbor is now hiring for Crew Member II in the Highway Department of Public Works. Benefits include two retirement options, medical insurance with Town contribution and HRA, two weeks of vacation annually, plus 12 paid holidays, and professional development support. Performs skilled and semi-skilled labor in the maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, sidewalks, storm drainage systems, and other public facilities. Operates small equipment and vehicles and may assist with larger equipment under supervision. Provides support to Light Equipment Operators, Heavy Equipment Operators and Crew Leaders on assigned projects. Works under the supervision of the Foreman or Crew leader or assigned lead person in the field. May provide direction to Crew Member I as assigned. Performs snow removal operations, including shoveling, sanding, and assisting with plowing operations for streets, sidewalks, and parking lots. Operates small equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, compactors, and hand tools. Operates chain saw and woodchipper equipment. Performs typical laboring duties including but not limited to shoveling, raking, sweeping, wheelbarrowing, chipping, and brush and tree removal as needed. Performs trash pick-up and litter removal from streets, sidewalks and all other public space as assigned. Drives light vehicles and small trucks to transport materials and equipment. Assists in asphalt patching, concrete work, ditching, tree trimming, and general street and sidewalk maintenance. Performs basic preventive maintenance on assigned tools and equipment and reports defects to supervisor. Maintains job-site safety standards and sets up traffic control devices as directed. Reports all damages, defects or needed repairs of equipment to Foreman on approved forms. Reports all accidents and near misses immediately to management. Assists in Town-wide emergency response, including weather-related events. Performs other related duties as assigned.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
May operate skid steer, snow blower, or other small-scale powered equipment under supervision. Responds to citizen inquiries on job sites in a courteous manner, referring complex questions to supervisor. Assists with stormwater collection system maintenance and repairs. Participates in safety meetings and training programs.
Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. Two (2) years' experience in construction, maintenance, or related field preferred. Valid State of Maine Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required. Satisfactory completion of background check, physical examination, and drug testing. Working knowledge of basic construction and maintenance practices. Skill in operation of hand and power tools. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public. Ability to perform heavy manual labor in varying weather conditions. Must maintain reliable telephone service for emergency call-backs. Must be available for on-call rotation. Small trucks, snow blowers, compactors, mowers, trimmers, shovels, rakes, power saws, and other hand and power tools. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, night vision, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in all types of outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee must be able to work extended hours when required including, nights, holidays and weekends.
