This Transportation Maintenance Worker 6-E8 will work at the St. Ignace Garage from approximately the end of October until mid-April each year. This position will then job change to a Bridge Worker 6-E8 position working at the Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) in St. Ignace from approximately mid-April until end of October each year, at which time the position will then job change back to the St. Ignace Garage as a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6-E8. Transportation Maintenance Worker (TMW) 6-E8: This position performs maintenance of state trunk lines, structures, and right-of-ways in the Superior Region. Duties include, but are not limited to, performing all surface, roadside general maintenance, and winter maintenance activities, operating various types of equipment and participating in the Transportation Maintenance Worker (TMW) work element program. This position is required to travel to work sites throughout the Region, requiring overnight travel. Winter work schedule includes afternoon, night, and weekend shift assignments with scheduled and unscheduled overtime. Operate a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more (e.g., dump truck, snowplow, etc.) when performing maintenance activities. Assist shift leaders with escorting vehicles over the bridge. Operate a motor vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more (e.g., hauling heavy loads in a semi-truck, dump trucks, blast trucks, vacuum trucks, long lowboy trailer) when performing work on the bridge or when escorting vehicles or vehicle/trailers over the Mackinac Bridge. Education Education typically acquired through completion of high school. Experience Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 No specific type or amount of experience is required. Transportation Maintenance Worker 7 One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking. Transportation Maintenance Worker E8 Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level. Bridge Worker 6 No specific type or amount is required. Bridge Worker 7 One year of experience in bridge maintenance or in bridge or industrial construction, including the operation of such equipment as cranes, pneumatic tools, air compressors, and concrete mixers equivalent to a Bridge Worker 6. Bridge Worker E8 Two years of experience in bridge maintenance or in bridge or industrial construction, including the operation of such equipment as cranes, pneumatic tools, air compressors, and concrete mixers equivalent to a Bridge Worker, including one year equivalent to a Bridge Worker 7. Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, E8 Must possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of hire. Continuing employment requires a CDL Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions within 12 months from the date of hire into the position. MDOT TMW
Work Element training and certification program. Bridge Worker 6-E8 Must possess a Commercial Learner's Permit at the time of hire. Continuing employment requires a CDL Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions within 12 months from the date of hire into the position. Some positions within this class series are assigned job duties that may require possession of a commercial Pesticide Applicators license in compliance with the Pesticide Control Act of 1976.
