Job Description

STREET MAINTENANCE WORKER NATURE OF WORK
This is semi-skilled maintenance and repair work. Work involves performance of a variety of tasks in the maintenance, repair, and construction of City streets, buildings, and parks. Work includes the operation of motorized equipment and the expenditure of heavy physical labor. Work is performed under direct supervision of the Street Superintendent or other supervisor and is reviewed through observation for results obtained, including completeness and workmanship.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
All of the following are to be performed while adhering to the City operational policies, safety rules and procedures.
  • Operates various types of equipment and performs a variety of tasks in maintenance, repair, and construction of roads, sidewalks, curbs, and other similar facilities.
  • Operates 1 ton and 3/4 ton trucks, pickup trucks, dump trucks, etc., various mowers and hand and power tools, and related equipment.
  • Operates and/or drives a 2-1/2 ton truck, with or without snow plow, as assigned.
  • Performs various semi-skilled building maintenance, repairs, and construction tasks including painting, plumbing, and masonry and electrical work.
  • Cleans, sweeps, washes, and performs maintenance and repair tasks in public buildings and facilities; cleans and conducts preventive checks and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used.
  • Performs landscaping activities including mowing grass, seeding, fertilizing, sweeping, pesticide application, raking grounds, planting and trimming trees and shrubs, and general gardening; performs landscaping after construction is complete to restore and replenish topsoil; rakes, grades, and seeds the area as required.
  • Performs park and right of way maintenance including trash removal and trash can installation and maintenance, tree planting, pruning and removal, ball field preparation and maintenance, swimming pool maintenance, sign installation and maintenance, path, sidewalk and parking lot maintenance, water fountain installation and maintenance, seasonal water shutoff and turn on, lighting maintenance, fence repairs, and playground equipment inspection and repair.
  • Performs road maintenance and repair tasks including mixing and pouring cement, asphalt repair and replace, patching potholes and cracks, sidewalks, and curbs; operates related equipment. Provides set up and breakdown of equipment for special events.
  • Cleans and makes minor repairs to tools and equipment, including lubricating equipment and sharpening tools.
  • Ensures that equipment is used safely and in accordance with standard procedures and precautions.
  • Performs heavy physical labor loading and unloading trucks and attaching and detaching accessories to equipment such as plows and spreaders.
  • May prepare simple routine records on work and equipment.
  • May be called out on a 24-hour basis.
  • Provides effective and efficient customer services and promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school (or GED) Missouri Class B Commercial Driver's License with airbrake endorsement. Possession of State Public Operator Pesticide license, preferred.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Experience performing maintenance or repair work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills: o Knowledge of common hand tools, materials, and standard equipment used in maintenance, repair and construction work. o Some knowledge of the practices, methods, and materials used in maintenance, repair, and construction of public streets, and buildings. o Some basic knowledge regarding working with electricity, plumbing, carpentry, construction and landscaping. o Some knowledge of the safety precautions and hazards of the work. o Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods if time, in all weather conditions. o Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. o Ability to learn a broad range of operational skills. o Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, and the public. o Skill in the use of hand and power tools and other equipment related to the work.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Knowledge of operation and use of motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, street sweeper, street roller, backhoe, man lift, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, trencher, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, jackhammers, forklift, road grader, paint sprayers, paint stripers, loaders, brooms. Skill in use of mobile radio, phone, personal computer; including word processing and other software, copy and fax machine, calculator.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
