The Public Works Maintenance Worker performs unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks on a variety of projects related to the Town's infrastructure and facilities. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Public Works Supervisor. This position regularly uses hand tools, power tools, and equipment to install, maintain, and repair roads, sidewalks, drainage systems, and other projects in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. The maintenance worker provides staffing for Town special events and weather emergencies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
These duties and responsibilities are not intended to be all-inclusive. The employee may perform other related duties to meet the Town's ongoing needs. Works as part of a crew to maintain public infrastructure of the Town (roads, sidewalks, drainage systems, parks) Cleans, maintains, and repairs tools and equipment to ensure their readiness for work Operates vehicles and trailers of various type and sizes to haul materials, personnel, and equipment to job sites Operates backhoes, bucket trucks, trenching equipment, dump trucks, and other equipment and machinery Cuts, trims, and chips trees and shrubs within Town right-of-way Removes dead animals from the roadway Mows grass, trims shrubs and trees, and performs landscaping duties at Town parks and facilities Provides staffing support in weather emergencies; participates in snow and ice operations Assists in the preparation for and staffing of Town special events Performs heavy manual work in various climatic conditions Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Uses hand tools, power tools, and other tools to construct, repair, and maintain asphalt, concrete, brick, and wood Working knowledge of construction means and methods related to roads, sidewalks, curb and gutter, drainage structures, ditches, and other work found in the municipal infrastructure environment General knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and small construction machinery and equipment Strong knowledge of and dedication to general safety procedures; commitment to wearing and using personal protection equipment, observing and correcting safety concerns throughout the Department Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Maintain work quality, while dealing with multiple demands, limited timelines, and deadlines Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town employees and the public Ability to make sound judgement calls and/or task decisions within the responsibility of the position Ability to repair and maintain small tools and equipment
Minimum Qualifications:
A High School diploma or G.E.D. is required A valid North Carolina Class C driver's license is required initially
Special Requirements:
A valid North Carolina CDL Class B driver's license, or the ability to obtain one within twelve months of hire is required
Physical Requirements:
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, sitting, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, and operation of motor vehicles or equipment. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. Work requires operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities. Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions including extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils. Frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and occasionally exposure to the risk of electrical shock. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location.
