JOB SUMMARY

An individual in this position is responsible for and performs manual labor; uses tools and equipment required to maintain, repair, construct streets, drainage, and assists with various construction, building, and maintenance projects; assists other crew members with repairs and installations to include new construction and maintenance for the City of Texas City buildings and equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Cleans, washes maintains and services tools and equipment. Participates in all phases of street, drainage and alley maintenance and construction. Performs general building maintenance, and minor carpentry repairs, moves and assembles furniture, performs plumbing repairs, and replaces fixtures; performs dry wall repairs including tape and bedding, texturing, painting, and cleaning; assists with minor repairs and maintenance of electrical and HVAC systems, all types of concrete work to include using a shovel, pick, and jackhammer. Assists with custodial duties as assigned. Works as required safely near highway traffic. Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the proper care and maintenance of equipment and supplies issued for jobs. Skill in performing construction and demolition using jackhammer: to dig trenches or pits: to load and unload materials and/or equipment at job site. Skill in use of materials and/or equipment in assigned area. Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing. Skill in the use of computers, Microsoft Office applications, and other software applications as required by the position. Skill in following instructions, written or verbal, to assist other employees with daily activities or assigned jobs. Skill in use of hand saw, skill saw, chain saw, compaction and vibratory equipment, bolt cutter, pick, axe, air compressor, jack hammer, and various weight hammers using proper safety precautions. Skill in use of lawnmowers, line trimmers, machetes; trims trees, weeds, and brush in ditches, or easements; walks through brush or entangled areas including rough terrain in drainage ditches and other areas. Skill in effective time management and resource utilization. Ability to read written or follow oral instructions, report orally to supervisor. Ability to handle after-hours calls out for emergency situations. Ability to load and unload materials and equipment. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to recognize, to understand, to follow, and enforce safety procedures. Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner. Ability to process information with accuracy. Ability to research, compile and summarize a variety of information and statistical data. Ability to work effectively with all levels of employees, management, and citizens.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy and requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: hearing clearly when working around equipment and in traffic, able to sit or stand for extended period of time while performing maintenance, handling, standing, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. Work involves considerable exposure to elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK

High School diploma or equivalent; Possession of a valid, State of Texas driver s license, Class B minimum with air brake endorsement or the ability to obtain within six months of employment and a driving record satisfactory to the City of Texas City and its insurers. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment. Uses good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly and supports the Safety Program.
