Industrial Millwright - Shop & Field Position reports to: Fabrication Operations Supervisor A&A Machine & Fabrication is a Petrochemical Job Shop specializing in the manufacture of LDPE High Pressure Tubing, ASME Code Pressure Vessels, Piping, Gasification Equipment, Specialty Alloy Fabrication, and Process Skids. The Industrial Millwright performs precision mechanical work in both A&A's fabrication/machine shop and customer facilities throughout the petrochemical, refining, chemical-processing and related industries. The position is responsible for the disassembly, inspection, measurement, repair, machining coordination, fit-up, installation, alignment and reassembly of process equipment, piping components and mechanical assemblies. This is a precision mechanical position , not simply an equipment installation role. Millwrights must understand how individual component dimensions, machining tolerances, fits, clearances and accumulated dimensional variation affect the final assembly. Field assignments may include shutdowns, turnarounds, equipment repairs, high-pressure piping systems, torquing, equipment change-outs and emergency maintenance. Primary Responsibilities Shop Mechanical & Precision Assembly Disassemble, inspect, repair and reassemble customer process equipment and mechanical assemblies. Perform dimensional inspection of incoming components before repair or machining. Establish and document as-found and as-left dimensions . Inspect shafts, bores, sleeves, bushings, bearing fits, flanges, sealing surfaces, blocks, spacers, rings and mating components. Use micrometers, inside micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, calipers, depth micrometers, height gauges, feeler gauges and other precision measuring equipment. Determine equipment fits and clearances from customer drawings, OEM specifications and approved procedures. Identify damaged, worn or out-of-tolerance components and communicate findings to supervision and Quality before proceeding. Assist machinists with determining required finished dimensions based upon mating-component measurements and specified operating clearances. Verify machined components before assembly. Perform precision mechanical fit-up and assembly following approved drawings and specifications. Check shaft runout, concentricity, axial movement, radial clearances and alignment as applicable. Maintain dimensional inspection and repair documentation. Part Stack-Up & Machining Tolerances The millwright must understand dimensional stack-up and recognize that individual components can each be within their respective machining tolerances while the assembled equipment may still fall outside the required overall dimension or operating clearance.
Responsibilities include:
Review assembly drawings and identify dimensions that control final equipment fit. Establish the dimensional chain between mating components. Measure individual components rather than relying solely on nominal drawing dimensions. Calculate actual assembled dimensions using measured component dimensions. Evaluate cumulative plus/minus machining tolerances across multiple components. Determine minimum and maximum theoretical stack-up when required. Compare theoretical stack-up against actual measured stack-up. Verify critical clearances before final assembly. Account for shims, spacers, wear plates, gaskets, lens rings, shoulders, sleeves, bearings and other components contributing to the dimensional stack. Recognize tolerance accumulation before machining a replacement component. Coordinate with machinists so repair dimensions are based on the actual mating equipment and required final assembly condition , rather than automatically machining every component to nominal dimensions. Perform intermediate dimensional checks during assembly rather than discovering accumulated error at final fit-up. Document deviations and obtain appropriate customer/engineering disposition when actual dimensions fall outside drawing or specification. Petrochemical / LDPE / LLDPE Equipment Experience with LDPE/LLDPE and other high-pressure process equipment is valuable but not required for every assignment.
Work may include:
Reactor and process piping components High-pressure piping connections Intercooler and heat-exchanger components Compressor-related equipment High-pressure blocks and connection assemblies Lens-ring sealing systems Spool pieces and transition spools Valves and associated mechanical assemblies Rotating equipment Bearings and bearing housings Shafts, sleeves and couplings Mechanical seals Flanges and sealing surfaces Structural/mechanical equipment assemblies Customer drawings, OEM specifications and approved procedures govern all dimensions and tolerances. Millwrights are not authorized to independently change dimensions, HP connection tolerances or engineering requirements. Field Responsibilities Mobilize to petrochemical, refinery and chemical-processing facilities for planned and emergency work. Perform equipment removal and installation. Disassemble and reassemble process equipment. Perform field dimensional inspection. Establish equipment centerlines, elevations and reference points. Perform equipment leveling and alignment. Perform connection alignment. Inspect and prepare flange and sealing surfaces. Install and remove piping spools and mechanical connections. Support equipment repairs and modifications. Perform controlled bolting and torquing. Support high-pressure piping connection work where properly trained and qualified. Take required before/after measurements associated with controlled bolting or HP connection procedures. Support hydrostatic testing, leak testing and commissioning activities as directed. Support chemical-cleaning operations through mechanical disconnect/reconnect work. Perform repeated disconnect/reconnect activities when additional cleaning or flushing cycles are required. Maintain tools and equipment and protect customer equipment during execution. Complete required field quality documentation. Required Skills Industrial millwright experience in shop and/or field environments. Strong mechanical aptitude. Ability to read mechanical drawings, fabrication drawings and equipment details. Understanding of dimensional tolerances and mechanical fits. Ability to perform basic tolerance and dimensional stack-up calculations. Proficiency with precision measuring instruments. Experience with mechanical disassembly and assembly. Ability to identify abnormal wear and equipment damage. Experience with rigging and equipment handling. Understanding of bolting and controlled tightening. Ability to document measurements accurately. Ability to communicate dimensional discrepancies to supervision, Quality and machining personnel. Preferred Experience Experience in petrochemical, refining, LDPE/LLDPE, syngas, gasification or other heavy process facilities , including precision mechanical work involving high-pressure systems, compressors, pumps, reactors, exchangers and process piping.
