Job Description

Job Overview We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Locator to join our dynamic team. In this vital role, you will be responsible for accurately locating underground utilities and fiber optic cables during horizontal directional drilling operations to ensure safe and efficient installation of telecommunications infrastructure. Your expertise will help prevent service disruptions, protect underground assets, and support the successful deployment of complex fiber optic networks. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work outdoors on cutting-edge projects, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools and heavy equipment in a fast-paced environment. Responsibilities Operate and interpret data from specialized diagnostic tools such as electromagnetic locators, signal generators, and other underground utility locating equipment to precisely identify underground fiber optic cables and telecommunications lines. Assist with the setup, calibration, and troubleshooting of telecommunication testing equipment used in fiber optic systems installation and network verification. Collaborate with drilling crews to monitor the location of underground utilities during horizontal directional drilling operations, ensuring compliance with safety standards such as the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC). Use hand tools, power tools, and bucket trucks to access and inspect work sites, supporting cable splicing, cable installation, and network infrastructure deployment. Interpret technical drawings, maps, and blueprints related to telecommunications network cable routing and underground infrastructure. Support telecommunications outside plant operations by assisting with cabling, fiber splicing, and testing of fiber optic networks in outdoor environments. Maintain detailed records of locates, diagnostics, and project documentation to ensure accuracy for future reference or troubleshooting needs. Qualifications Proven experience in field service roles involving heavy equipment operation, outdoor work environments, or utility locating is highly desirable. Strong knowledge of fiber optic cables, telecommunications testing equipment, telecommunication systems installation, and network infrastructure. Ability to operate diagnostic tools effectively for locating underground utilities and troubleshooting technical issues within fiber optic networks. Familiarity with interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and underground utility maps related to telecommunication projects. Experience with climbing ladders or poles safely while adhering to safety protocols such as those outlined by the NESC. Competency in using hand tools, power tools, bucket trucks, and other equipment essential for outdoor telecommunications work. Technical proficiency in computer networking concepts including LAN (Local Area Network), WAN (Wide Area Network), Ethernet cabling, low voltage wiring, telephony systems, and IT infrastructure support. Knowledge of telecommunications outside plant operations including cable splicing and fiber optic network deployment. Strong troubleshooting skills combined with engineering troubleshooting support for complex network issues.
