Training provided for motivated candidates with strong foundational cabling experience Position Summary The Data Center Field Installation Technician II (L2) is responsible for performing and supporting moderate-complexity installation and deployment activities within a data center environment. This position focuses on rack and equipment installation, structured cabling, power connections, hardware deployment, system validation, troubleshooting, and quality assurance. The L2 Technician works with a high degree of independence, follows engineering drawings and installation standards, identifies and resolves installation issues, and provides technical guidance to L1 technicians and project teams. The position requires strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform rack assembly, preparation, and deployment activities in accordance with engineering drawings, rack elevations, and project specifications.
Install, rack, stack, and secure servers, storage systems, network equipment, and other data center hardware.
Install, route, dress, label, and validate copper and fiber-optic cabling.
Perform basic fiber and copper cable testing and troubleshoot connectivity issues.
Install and verify power connections, including A/B redundant feeds and rack Power Distribution Units (PDUs).
Follow cable management, labeling, grounding, and equipment installation standards.
Interpret technical drawings, rack elevations, floor plans, schematics, cable schedules, and Method of Procedure (MOP) documentation.
Perform hardware inspections, initial system bring-up, and installation validation activities.
Assist with BIOS, firmware, operating system imaging, and basic hardware configuration as required.
Perform basic network connectivity and hardware functionality checks.
Support installation and validation of data center cooling and airflow-management components.
Troubleshoot installation-related hardware, cabling, power, and connectivity issues.
Identify defective or improperly installed components and coordinate replacement or corrective action.
Complete quality-control inspections and verify installations against project standards and checklists.
Maintain accurate installation records, asset information, cable documentation, and project status updates.
Provide technical direction and support to L1 technicians and other installation personnel.
Coordinate with project managers, engineers, network teams, operations personnel, and other contractors to resolve installation issues.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Follow all site security, safety, quality, and operational procedures.
Escalate complex technical issues according to established procedures.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
2+ years of experience in data center installation, IT infrastructure, telecommunications, network installation, or a related technical field.
Hands-on experience with rack-and-stack activities and data center hardware installation.
Working knowledge of servers, storage systems, network equipment, racks, PDUs, and structured cabling.
Experience installing and working with both copper and fiber-optic cabling.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, rack elevations, schematics, and installation documentation.
Basic understanding of data center power distribution and redundant A/B power configurations.
Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Ability to use hand tools and common installation/testing equipment.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to installation quality.
Ability to work independently while following established procedures and project requirements.
Ability to communicate effectively with technicians, engineers, supervisors, and project teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Data center, telecommunications, structured cabling, electrical, networking, or IT certifications.
Experience with large-scale or hyperscale data center deployments.
Experience with fiber-optic testing and certification equipment.
Experience with server hardware, network switches, storage systems, and rack infrastructure.
Experience with liquid-cooling or advanced data center cooling systems.
Familiarity with BIOS/firmware updates, OS imaging, and hardware validation.
Previous experience leading or mentoring junior technicians.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and work in a data center environment for extended periods.
Ability to safely lift, carry, and position equipment and materials as required by the project.
Ability to work from ladders or elevated work areas when required.
Ability to work in controlled data center environments that may include elevated noise levels, temperature variations, and restricted-access areas.
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Work Environment This is an on-site position in a data center environment. The role may require shift work, overtime, weekends, holidays, or extended hours based on project schedules and operational requirements. Travel between data center facilities may be required depending on project needs. Success in This Role The successful candidate will be a hands-on, safety-conscious technician who can independently complete installation assignments, identify problems before they affect project schedules, maintain high installation standards, and effectively support other technicians. The L2 Technician is expected to take ownership of assigned work and consistently deliver accurate, reliable, and well-documented installations.
