JOB SUMMARY:

Assist the trade workers they are working with by carrying equipment and doing assigned tasks. Most have 3 years of trade experience. Must own your own required tools to perform your trade specific duties.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS

• Combustible materials that cannot be removed, protected or shielded
• Climbing up and down ship's stairways (called ladders) with a 271/2 pound fire extinguisher
• Possible exposure to welding or toxic fumes.
• Loud noises
• Transfer of heat from one space to another or to spaces below.
• Fire in adjacent spaces with a need for rapid evacuation and egress
• Coverings used to protect equipment may not be fire retardant.

REQUIREMENTS

• Must be experienced in the use of power tools such as grinders, needle guns, and portable electrical equipment and an assortment of hand tools.

Fire Watch:

• Personal protective equipment (PPE - SAFETY

SHOES, SAFETY GLASSES W/TINTED LENSES, HARDHAT, RESPIRATOR, HEARING

PROTECTION, and VEST) is required to be worn.

• A fire watch must be posted during hot work when any of the following conditions are present:
• Slag, weld splatter, or sparks or any activity that may cause a fire
• Remain in the hot work area for at least 30 minutes after completion of the hot work unless the employer or its representative surveys the exposed area and makes a determination that there is no further fire hazard.
• Be trained to detect fires that occur in areas exposed to the hot work.
• Attempt to extinguish any incipient stage fires in the hot work area that are within the capability of available equipment and within the fire watch's training qualifications.
• Alert employees of any fire beyond the incipient stage.
• Activate the alarm if unable to extinguish fire in the areas exposed to the hot work.
• Be physically capable of performing fire watch duties.

Physical Requirements:

• Work involves considerable stooping, bending, and working in overhead structures and on scaffolds.
• May be required to lift and/or carry equipment/objects greater than 50lbs.
