The job involves much more than placing cones.
Typical duties include:
Setting up and removing traffic control devices such as cones, barricades, signs, drums, and arrow boards. Following approved Traffic Control Plans (TCPs) to ensure the work zone meets state and local requirements. Directing traffic safely when required using stop/slow paddles or hand signals (if certified as a flagger). Inspecting the work zone throughout the day to make sure signs and devices remain in the correct positions. Operating company vehicles and, when trained, towing trailers or using equipment such as message boards and attenuator trucks. Communicating with supervisors, contractors, and crews about traffic conditions and any needed changes. Responding quickly to emergencies, accidents, or changing traffic conditions to keep the public and workers safe. Maintaining equipment and reporting damaged or missing traffic control devices. Following all OSHA, state DOT, and company safety policies. Completing daily paperwork, inspections, and work logs.
