Performs a variety of maintenance work and operates a variety of light equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of stormwater and public roadway infrastructure. Requires more than usual physical strength and endurance. Responsibilities Performs highway maintenance work on public roads and rights-of-way, including repair of guard rails, highway markers, traffic signals, and signs. Performs inspection and/or repair of streets and storm drainage systems at regular intervals to ensure that all aspects are functioning properly; Mixes, pours, and spreads concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other materials; Fells trees, cuts limbs up, and drags the pieces to a brush chipper. Loads pieces into the brush chipper or onto the truck. Completes a variety of accurate records relating to roadway maintenance and daily operations. Operates leaf collection equipment during the season. Operates truck with snowplow blade and salt spreader during inclement weather events. Available for scheduled and emergency overtime and responds as expected when on-call. Performs other duties as related or assigned. Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools. Skills Knowledge of equipment operation to include plate compactors, power tamps, chain saws, cement saws, or any other roadway maintenance items. General knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in road maintenance, skilled maintenance, manual tasks, and repair work. May be trained to operate front-end loaders, bucket trucks, backhoes, street sweepers, rollers, light tractors, mowing equipment, and other applicable equipment. Skill to operate a motorized vehicle and trailer combination. Skilled in identifying occupational hazards. Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to physically negotiate different types of terrain with proper mobility to control body direction (walk over curbs and obstacles, on gravel, over unimproved paths and roadways, on flat surfaces, concrete, carpet). Ability to exert force to lift or move objects of varying weight (up to 50 pounds) and size (lifting equipment and tools, humans, protective equipment). Ability and dexterity to work with handheld tools, such as common hand and power tools, shovels, rakes, trimmers, mobile radio, and cell phones. Visual acuity to distinguish between short and long distances and define, recognize, evaluate, and differentiate objects (seeing written information, messages, signs, warnings, safety hazards). Auditory acuity to hear, differentiate, and evaluate varying sounds (cell phone, radio, or communication equipment, safety warnings) from close and far distances. Ability to work for extended periods doing heavy labor. Ability to work and operate in extreme temperatures and temperature changes (heat, humidity, below freezing, wind chill).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED required;
  • Two (2) full years of full-time experience relating to similar work as outlined above preferred, any equivalent combination of related education, training and experience;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements.
Employees who do not hold the required CDL at the time of hire must obtain it within six (6) months through the Township's internal training program;
