Sterile Processing Technician

Job Description

Job Overview The sterile processing tech will be responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of supplies and equipment following established infection control practices. Supports surgery with supplies and maintains accurate record-keeping of sterilization quality assurance tests and sterilization cycles of sterilizers. Responsibilities 1. Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and mission, vision and values. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations. 2. Assists in stocking, preparation and waste management of supplies, ensuring adequate supply levels and proper ordering and storing of supplies. Utilizes all organizational resources effectively and efficiently. 3. Follows the chain of command by consulting with other healthcare professionals and seeks assistance as needed. 4. Have thorough knowledge of aseptic technique, sterilization techniques, infection control requirements, basic knowledge of medical/surgical procedures and terminology. 5. Carefully inventories each tray/set following cases. Validates containers/wrapped items to confirm filters, locks, indicators and valve plates are in place. 6. Assembles all instrument trays, sets, kits and packs according to the prescribed manner using content lists. Wraps, packages and handles them according to the standard procedure. Properly uses, handles and disposes of hazardous materials. 7. Consults with supervisor when unable to replace parts or when equipment is deficient. Sends all inoperable equipment to appropriate area for pick up and repair. 8. Dispenses products requested for sterile and non-sterile equipment. 9. Follows routine schedules for cleaning and maintaining equipment. Performs leak test on all flexible endoscopes prior to cleaning and disinfecting according to established procedure. Performs routine cleaning of instruments. 10. Provides clean, safe, and orderly work and storage areas and performs general housekeeping duties, both on the interior and exterior of cleaning and sterilization devices. Applies aseptic techniques in daily work assignments. 11. Participates in the orientation of new associates. Provides feedback on the progress of the new associates regularly. 12. Performs biological and chemical monitoring. Performs visible inspection of the sterilizers and reports concerns immediately to supervisor/manager. 13. Processes all contaminated instruments, supplies and equipment. Prioritizes trays that need to be turned over. 14. Receives/processes loaner trays. Manually cleans power tools, scopes, lenses and other delicate instruments. 15. Sterilizes instruments, equipment, and supplies. Properly loads sterilizer and sets controls to specified time and temperature. Completes appropriate documentation records prior to sterilization. Reads marks and initials autoclave printout to verify appropriate sterilization cycle and provides records for inspection. 16. Inspects items sterilized to assure integrity of wrapped items and sterilization. 17. Independently identifies resources and strategies to enhance professional growth and development. Participate in meetings and on committees and other educational programs to enhance patient care. 18. Provide world-class, compassionate care to every patient and strive to create an exceptional experience for patients and their families.
Pay:
$22.50 - $30.00 per hour
