Lead CNC Programmer/Machinist Position Summary The Lead CNC Programmer/Machinist serves as the technical lead for CNC machining operations and is responsible for programming, setting up, operating, troubleshooting, and optimizing CNC mills and turning centers. This is a highly hands-on position that will spend significant time on the production floor setting up and operating machines while also providing technical direction, training, and support to junior CNC programmers/machinists and machine operators. The Lead CNC Programmer/Machinist is responsible for ensuring CNC programs, setups, tooling, machining processes, and finished parts meet quality and production requirements. This position works closely with management and engineering to resolve manufacturing issues, improve processes, increase productivity, and support a culture of quality and continuous improvement. Essential Responsibilities CNC Programming, Setup & Machining Create, modify, troubleshoot, and optimize CNC programs for CNC turning centers and milling machines. Program, set up, and operate CNC mills and lathes on a daily basis. Set up and run multiple CNC machines simultaneously as production requirements dictate. Select appropriate tooling, workholding, feeds, speeds, and cutting conditions for machining operations. Verify programs, tooling, work offsets, and machine setups prior to production. Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, BOMs, engineering specifications, and 3D models. Inspect in-process and completed components to ensure parts meet dimensional and quality requirements. Troubleshoot programming, machining, tooling, equipment, and quality issues and make appropriate adjustments. Optimize machining processes and programming strategies to improve quality, reduce cycle times, minimize waste, and increase productivity. Maintain accurate and organized CNC programs, setup documentation, tooling information, and machining records. Perform routine and preventive maintenance on CNC equipment and identify equipment issues requiring additional attention. Leadership & Team Development Serve as the primary technical resource for junior CNC programmers/machinists and CNC operators. Provide day-to-day technical direction and support to CNC programming and machining personnel. Assist in assigning and prioritizing CNC work based on production requirements and available resources. Train and mentor junior programmers, machinists, and operators in CNC programming, setup, operation, tooling, quality, and safe work practices. Review and provide guidance on CNC programs, setups, tooling selections, and machining processes developed by junior team members. Promote consistent machining and programming practices across the CNC department. Identify training needs and assist management in developing employees' technical skills. Lead by example through hands-on participation in programming, setup, machining, troubleshooting, and problem-solving. Quality & Continuous Improvement Work with management, engineering, and production personnel to identify and resolve manufacturing-related quality issues. Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions to address machining and quality problems. Assist with the development and implementation of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives. Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce downtime, increase productivity, and improve product quality. Promote a culture of quality, accountability, safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Production Support Review BOMs and prioritize machining activities according to the production schedule. Coordinate CNC machining activities to support production requirements and deadlines. Communicate production issues, machine downtime, material requirements, and quality concerns to management as needed. Work collaboratively with engineering and production to resolve issues and ensure successful manufacturing of new and existing components. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications & Competencies Extensive knowledge of CNC lathe and mill operations. Strong understanding of CNC programming, setup, and machining processes. Proficiency with G-code and M-code at the machine control. Advanced proficiency with Autodesk Fusion Manufacture workspace. Strong knowledge of tooling selection, workholding, feeds, speeds, and cutting conditions. Experience designing and/or utilizing machining fixtures and workholding solutions. Ability to read and interpret technical blueprints, engineering drawings, BOMs, and 3D models. Ability to troubleshoot CNC programs, machine setups, tooling, and machining processes. Proficient in both metric and imperial measurement systems. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to train, mentor, and provide technical direction to others. Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong organizational and prioritization skills. Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a dynamic and changing manufacturing environment. Ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook. Required Experience Minimum of 5 years of progressive CNC machining experience, including significant experience programming, setting up, and operating both CNC mills and lathes. Demonstrated experience creating and optimizing CNC programs in a production environment. Demonstrated ability to independently set up and operate CNC equipment. Previous experience providing technical direction, training, or mentoring to other machinists or CNC operators. Preferred Experience Experience with DMG MORI and/or Haas CNC equipment. Experience with Autodesk Fusion Manufacture. Experience designing machining fixtures and workholding. Experience with lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives. Previous experience serving as a Lead Machinist, Lead Programmer, or similar technical leadership role. Physical & Work Environment This is a hands-on manufacturing position requiring regular and frequent presence on the production floor. Must be willing and able to perform CNC machine setup and operation on a daily basis. Must be able to work safely around operating CNC machinery, tooling, materials, and related manufacturing equipment. Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform other physical activities associated with CNC machining and production operations.
Pay:
$30.00 - $34.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
