Job Description

WORKSHOP ASSISTANT
Furniture Unlimited, LLC Position Overview Furniture Unlimited is seeking a dependable, hands-on Workshop Assistant to join our furniture refurbishment team. This is a skilled production position for someone who either has experience working with their hands or is genuinely willing and able to learn. You do not need to be an experienced furniture refinisher. We can teach our process. What we cannot teach is work ethic, attention to detail, reliability, or the willingness to learn and improve.

Our Workshop Assistants work together to transform used furniture into beautiful, high-quality finished pieces. The work includes furniture repair, preparation, sanding, cleaning, priming, painting, and finishing. This is an active, physical job. You will use power tools, get dirty, work with paint and cleaning products, move furniture, and be expected to stay productive throughout your shift. What You'll Do As a Workshop Assistant, you will: Prepare furniture for refinishing, including removing hardware, drawers, doors, and other components. Inspect furniture and identify areas requiring repair or additional preparation. Perform minor furniture repairs using wood filler, Bondo, adhesives, and other appropriate materials. Use hand and power tools, including sanders, drills, vacuums, and other workshop equipment. Sand and smooth furniture surfaces to prepare them for finishing. Thoroughly clean furniture before priming and painting. Prime and hand-paint furniture according to Furniture Unlimited's established process. Produce smooth, clean finishes using consistent painting techniques. Reassemble furniture correctly after refinishing. Clean and maintain tools, equipment, workstations, and workshop areas. Help move and organize furniture throughout the workshop. Complete assigned pieces within established production expectations. Inspect your own work and correct imperfections before considering a piece complete. Follow established processes rather than creating shortcuts or changing procedures without approval. What We're Looking For The right person is: Skilled with their hands OR eager and capable of learning. Comfortable using or learning to use power tools and hand tools. Comfortable sanding, painting, cleaning, repairing, and working with furniture. Detail-oriented and able to recognize imperfections. Able to consistently complete the department's established requirements and meet performance, production, quality, and efficiency expectations. Able to follow a process consistently from beginning to end. Coachable and willing to ask questions when unsure. Able to receive feedback and apply it to future work. Self-motivated and capable of working without constant supervision. Reliable and punctual. Organized and able to keep a clean workspace. Comfortable performing repetitive, physical work. Able to stay focused and productive during a fast-paced shift. Someone who takes pride in producing work they would be comfortable putting their name on. Quality Matters Furniture Unlimited produces high-end refurbished furniture , and quality is not optional.

Our expectation is near perfection. Finished pieces should be clean, smooth, properly prepared, and professionally painted. Drips, heavy paint, missed areas, rough surfaces, poor preparation, visible debris, and unfinished details are not considered acceptable finished work.

Speed matters, but speed cannot come at the expense of craftsmanship. The goal is to become both efficient and highly consistent. Training & Ramp-Up Every Workshop Assistant begins with a six-month ramp-up period. You are not expected to know everything when you start. You are expected to learn.

During this period, employees should: Ask questions when they are unsure. Learn Furniture Unlimited's established refurbishment process. Practice proper use of tools, materials, paint, and equipment. Develop speed while maintaining our quality standards. Learn to identify problems and come prepared with possible solutions. Apply feedback so the same corrections do not need to be repeatedly made. Become increasingly independent as skills and experience develop. There are many furniture refinishers, furniture flippers, tutorials, and techniques available online, and everyone may approach furniture differently. At Furniture Unlimited, however, we have our own established process and quality standard. Employees are expected to learn and follow that process consistently.

Ideas and suggestions are welcome—just ask before changing the process. Production Expectations This is a part-time, production-focused position. Workshop Assistants are generally scheduled in focused four-hour shifts , and those four hours are expected to be productive. Because the shifts are short, employees must arrive ready to work, stay focused, and give their full effort while they are here. All Workshop Assistants are required to meet the established requirements and expectations of the department. This includes production goals, quality standards, assigned responsibilities, established processes, attendance, efficiency, and the ability to complete work independently as training progresses.

The department's minimum production requirement is 10 completed refurbished pieces per week. Production exceeding the department's minimum may qualify for additional production-based compensation under the company's current incentive program.

As employees complete the six-month ramp-up period and demonstrate reliability, quality, efficiency, and independence, there may also be opportunities for: Additional shifts or hours Increased responsibility Lead or supervisory responsibilities Performance bonuses Pay increases Advancement within Furniture Unlimited Physical Requirements Applicants should be comfortable: Standing and moving for the majority of the shift. Bending, kneeling, reaching, and working in different positions. Moving and assisting with furniture. Working around dust, paint, primers, cleaning products, and workshop materials. The Bottom Line We are looking for someone who likes working with their hands, notices the little things, isn't afraid of hard work, and wants to learn a skill.
