Furniture Design & Specification Lead

Job Description

Position Summary We are seeking an experienced, highly skilled Furniture Design & Specification Lead to serve as the furniture expert for our commercial interiors team. This role is responsible for leading furniture specification activities from concept through installation, partnering directly with clients, architects, interior designers, sales professionals, and project managers to deliver exceptional workplace environments. The ideal candidate combines deep technical furniture knowledge with strong design sensibilities and outstanding client-facing communication skills. This individual will be responsible for developing complete furniture solutions, selecting and coordinating finishes, creating accurate specifications, validating pricing, and ensuring every product, finish, accessory, and component is correct before order placement. This is a leadership role that requires independent decision-making, project ownership, and the ability to guide and mentor support staff while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Client Consultation & Project Leadership Serve as the primary furniture specification expert for commercial furniture projects. Lead client meetings to understand workplace objectives, functional requirements, aesthetic preferences, and budget parameters. Collaborate directly with architects, interior designers, end users, and project stakeholders to develop furniture solutions that support project goals. Present furniture recommendations, finish palettes, and product applications confidently and professionally. Translate design concepts, finish boards, renderings, and architectural materials into coordinated furniture specifications. Provide expert guidance regarding furniture applications, ergonomics, durability, workplace trends, and interior design considerations. Furniture Specification & Finish Selection Develop complete and accurate furniture specifications for systems furniture, private offices, conference rooms, training spaces, ancillary furnishings, seating, storage, and specialty products. Create cohesive finish schemes based on architectural finishes, brand standards, inspiration boards, or client preferences. Coordinate surface materials across all furniture categories. Produce detailed furniture specification packages and supporting documentation. Utilize CET Commercial Interiors, AutoCAD, and manufacturer specification tools to develop layouts, renderings, and order documentation. Specification & Technical Accuracy Produce accurate and complete furniture specifications for all project types. Review and validate every furniture component, finish, accessory, electrical element, and configuration before order placement. Conduct comprehensive quality-control reviews to ensure specification accuracy. Verify furniture layouts, dimensions, field conditions, and coordination with architectural plans. Review manufacturer acknowledgments and bills of materials to ensure all products are specified correctly. Resolve specification issues and product discrepancies before they impact project schedules. Pricing & Contract Expertise Prepare, review, and validate project pricing. Apply manufacturer discount programs and dealership pricing standards accurately. Understand and correctly apply cooperative purchasing contract pricing structures, such as OMNIA Partners, TIPS, and state and local purchasing contracts. Review discount structures and pricing calculations to ensure accuracy. Support sales teams with budgeting, pricing validation, and furniture cost analysis. Project Leadership Take ownership and lead multiple furniture specification projects simultaneously. Stay current on product updates, finish offerings, pricing structures, lead times, and specification standards. Serve as a resource for sales teams, designers, and project managers regarding product applications and pricing. Contribute to the development of departmental standards and continuous improvement initiatives. Participate in manufacturer training and continuing education opportunities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
7+ years of commercial furniture specification experience within a furniture dealership, manufacturer, or commercial interiors environment. Extensive knowledge of systems furniture, ancillary furniture, seating, storage, architectural products, and workplace environments. Strong understanding of furniture finish selection, material coordination, and interior design principles. Advanced proficiency in CET Commercial Interiors and AutoCAD. Proven ability to develop complete furniture specifications and installation documentation. Experience reviewing bills of materials, order acknowledgments, and detailed product specifications. Knowledge of commercial furniture pricing methodologies and cooperative purchasing contracts. Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills. Ability to confidently lead client meetings and presentations.
