Full-Time Position Summary We are seeking a dependable and safety-focused Grinder / Plasma Plate Finishing Operator to join our manufacturing team. This position is responsible for removing slag, dross, and mill scale from plasma-cut steel plates and fabricated parts to prepare them for welding, machining, painting, or other downstream manufacturing processes. The position also requires the safe operation of overhead cranes, jib cranes, forklifts, and other material-handling equipment to move plates, parts, and raw materials throughout the manufacturing facility. Essential Responsibilities Remove slag, dross, sharp edges, and excess material from plasma-cut plates and parts using grinders, chipping tools, and other hand or power tools. Remove mill scale, oxidation, and surface imperfections as required by production specifications. Inspect finished plates and parts to ensure they meet dimensional, quality, and surface-finish requirements. Safely move and position steel plates, parts, and raw materials using overhead cranes, hoists, and forklifts. Properly attach and secure loads using approved slings, chains, hooks, magnets, and other lifting devices. Operate forklifts to load, unload, stage, and transport materials within the facility. Read and follow work orders, drawings, job travelers, and production instructions. Maintain proper identification and organization of plates and fabricated parts. Use grinders, cutoff wheels, wire wheels, pneumatic tools, and other equipment safely and correctly. Perform basic maintenance and inspections of grinders, forklifts, cranes, and other equipment and report defects or unsafe conditions. Keep work areas clean, organized, and free of hazards. Follow all company safety procedures, including proper PPE requirements and safe lifting practices. Work closely with plasma operators, welders, fabricators, and production personnel to maintain an efficient workflow. Perform other duties as assigned by the Production Supervisor. Required Qualifications Previous experience in a manufacturing, steel fabrication, metalworking, or industrial environment preferred. Experience operating grinders and other handheld power tools. Ability to safely handle and work around heavy steel plates and fabricated components. Previous forklift and/or overhead crane experience preferred. Ability to read and understand basic work instructions and measurements. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work. Ability to work safely in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Reliable attendance and willingness to follow established procedures. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to frequently bend, stoop, reach, climb, and work in various positions. Ability to lift and handle materials and tools as required. Ability to work around noise, dust, sparks, grinding debris, and industrial equipment. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toe footwear, and appropriate face/respiratory protection when required. Ability to safely perform repetitive grinding and material-handling tasks. Safety Responsibilities Safety is a primary responsibility of this position.
The employee must:
Follow all OSHA and company safety requirements. Conduct required pre-operation inspections of forklifts, cranes, and other equipment. Never exceed rated lifting or equipment capacities. Maintain awareness of personnel and equipment operating in the work area. Properly secure and balance loads before moving them. Immediately report unsafe equipment, conditions, injuries, or near-miss incidents to supervision. Use appropriate guards, handles, and PPE when operating grinding and power equipment. Preferred Qualifications Previous steel fabrication or structural steel experience. Experience finishing plasma- or oxy-fuel-cut steel. Forklift certification or documented forklift operating experience. Overhead crane experience. Experience using tape measures, calipers, or other basic measuring tools. Experience reading fabrication drawings or shop travelers. The ideal candidate is a hardworking, safety-conscious individual who takes pride in producing clean, quality-finished parts and can safely handle the movement of heavy steel materials throughout the manufacturing facility.
Pay:
$17.00 - $18.00 per hour
