Full Job Description Job Title:
CNC Machinist / Mold maker Position Overview We are seeking a highly skilled CNC Machinist / Mold maker to join our precision tooling team. In this role, you will be responsible for setting up, programming, and operating 3-axis CNC machining centers to fabricate, modify, and repair complex plastic injection molds This role bridges the gap between high-precision CNC programming and master-level tool room bench work, requiring a deep understanding of tight tolerances and mold design principles. Key Responsibilities
CNC Setup & Operation:
Set up and operate 3-axis CNC mills, lathes and EDMs to machine complex mold components, including cores, cavities, inserts, and slider mechanisms.
Programming & CAD/CAM:
Utilize CAD/CAM (GIBBS CAM) to generate and optimize efficient 2D and 3D CNC tool paths.
Blueprint & Model Review:
Interpret complex engineering drawings, 3D CAD model.
Mold making & Bench work: Perform precision bench work, hand fitting, polishing, and assembly of mold components. Fit and tune parting lines, slides, and lifters.
Inspection & Quality Control:
Conduct in-process and final inspection of components using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and bore gauges to maintain tolerances.
Maintenance & Repair:
Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair production mold issues, engineering changes (ECRs), and revision modifications.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Experience:
Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on CNC machining experience specifically focused on injection molds.
Technical Skills:
Strong proficiency in programming 3D surface tool paths for hardened tool steels (e.g., H13, P20, S7) and pre-hardened alloys.
Shop Math:
Advanced knowledge of shop trigonometry and manufacturing mathematics.
Tooling Expertise:
Deep understanding of mold mechanics, gating systems, cooling lines, and ejection systems.
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent required; completion of a formal Machinist or Tool & Die Apprenticeship or an Associate Degree in Precision Machining is highly preferred.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. independently.
Ability to stand, bend, and move around a machine shop floor for extended periods.
