Overview:

To perform functions assigned in the set up and operation of machine tools applying knowledgeof machining methods. Precision instrument makers who fabricates, modify, or repairmechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine toolsor maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metalproperties, layout, and machining procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs set up and operation of machine tools to machine metallic and nonmetallicwork pieces according to specifications, tooling instructions, and standard charts,applying knowledge of machining methods.
• Reads blueprint or job orders for product specifications, such as dimensions andtolerances, and tooling instructions, such as fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth ofcut and determines sequence of operations.
• Positions and secures work pieces in holding device, machine table, chuck, centers, orfixtures, using clamps and wrenches. Moves controls to position tool and work piece inrelation to each other, and to set specified feeds, speeds and depth of cut.
• Observes operation of machine and verifies conformance of machined work piece tospecifications, using measuring instruments, such as fixed gauges, calipers, andmicrometers.
• Operates bench grinder to sharpen tools.
• Sets up and operates machines and equipment other than machine tools, such aswelding machines and flame-cutting equipment.
• Other duties may be assigned.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, andmaintenance.
• Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. Thisincludes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design andproduction of various goods and services.
• Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and othertechniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
• FAA repair station Tool fabrication experience
• IDG/CSD machining and rework experience

Qualifications:

Education and Experience Requirements:

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Three to five years' experience as a machinist required, five to ten years of experiencepreferred.
• Must read and write the English language.
• Flexibility to work beyond 40 hours/week as required.
• Represents strong familiarity to MRO production processes.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Abilityto write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one andsmall group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtracts, multiply, and divides in all units of measure, using whole numbers,common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw andinterpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Skills:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situationswhere only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnishedin written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Protective Equipment Required:

Goggles, safety glasses, face shields, ear protection, aprons, gloves, respirators, breathingequipment per safety data sheet which will be provided by company.

Potential Hazards:

Exposure to high intensity noise levels, extreme changes in temperature, airborne substancessuch as glass beads or metal shavings, materials identified on Material Safety Data Sheets,working around moving machinery.
