Job Description
At F.S. Repair, our employees are an important part of what makes our company successful. We are a family-owned industrial repair and manufacturing company located in Kingsley, Iowa, approximately 30 minutes northeast of Sioux City. Repair is currently seeking a full-time Manual Lathe Operator / Machinist . Previous machining or welding experience is preferred, but we are also willing to train the right person who is mechanically inclined, dependable, and eager to learn. Position Summary The Manual Lathe Operator / Machinist sets up and operates manually controlled machine tools used in the fabrication, repair, maintenance, and modification of machinery, components, and equipment. This position works primarily with manual machining equipment and requires attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to producing quality work safely and efficiently.
Responsibilities Responsibilities may include:
Set up and operate manual lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses, and other machine shop equipment. Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and job specifications. Use micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring instruments to verify dimensions and tolerances. Determine appropriate speeds, feeds, tooling, and machining methods. Safely select, install, align, and remove cutting tools, fixtures, attachments, and workpieces. Machine, fabricate, repair, and modify parts made from various metals and other materials. Operate equipment including manual lathes, vertical mills, drill presses, hydraulic presses, band saws, chop saws, broaches, grinders, and related shop equipment. Identify and properly use inserts, tooling, fixtures, and cutting equipment. Perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance of machines and work areas. Track parts, labor, and jobs within the company's Vantage system. Follow company safety procedures, quality standards, specifications, and work instructions. Identify opportunities to improve machining methods, setups, and production efficiency. Perform TIG and MIG welding as needed. Perform oxy-acetylene cutting, heating, and brazing as needed. Complete additional shop and repair duties as assigned. Qualifications The ideal candidate will have general knowledge of: Manual machining practices and machine shop equipment. Measuring tools and machining tolerances. Metals, alloys, and their machining characteristics. Machine tools, tooling, maintenance, and repair. Blueprint and technical drawing interpretation. Estimating the time and materials required for machining and repair work. Previous machining, welding, industrial repair, or related experience is preferred; however, F.S. Repair is willing to provide on-the-job training to the right candidate. Education & Requirements High school diploma or GED required. Valid driver's license required. Ability to communicate effectively and understand written and verbal work instructions. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and measurements. Ability to work independently with limited supervision. Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail. Commitment to safe work practices and quality workmanship. Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to: Stand and walk for extended periods. Reach, bend, and perform routine shop activities. Lift up to 50 lbs. when required. Move and position heavier components using an overhead crane or other lifting equipment. Perform work requiring close vision, depth perception, and the ability to accurately read measuring instruments. Work Environment This position is performed in an industrial machine shop and repair environment. Employees regularly work around machinery, tools, metal components, and industrial equipment and are expected to follow all established safety procedures.
