Expert Team Lead Welder

Job Description

About the Role J Schneider Studio is looking for a Expert Structural Welding Team Lead to run the job site day-to-day, not just wear the title. This is a hands-on leadership role: you'll weld, inspect, mentor, and hold the line on quality, because precision here isn't optional. We need someone who catches problems before they leave the shop, not after a client does. Responsibilities Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of welders and fabricators Assign daily workloads and monitor project progress to ensure production deadlines are met Perform high-quality SMAW (Stick Welding) on structural steel, heavy plate, and custom architectural metal projects Read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols Inspect welds and fabricated assemblies to ensure compliance with company quality standards and project specifications, catch fit-up, penetration, and dimensional issues before they become rework Coordinate and communicate clearly with the Project Manager, Lead Fabricator, and Creative Director to maintain workflow and resolve fabrication issues Communicate professionally with builders and clients Train new employees on welding procedures, fabrication techniques, safety practices, and equipment operation Enforce OSHA safety regulations and maintain a clean, organized shop and job site environment Monitor inventory of welding consumables and fabrication materials and communicate purchasing needs Assist with scheduling manpower, equipment, and fabrication priorities Troubleshoot fabrication challenges and recommend process improvements to increase efficiency Operate shop equipment including forklifts, overhead cranes, grinders, plasma cutters, and oxy-fuel equipment Travel with overnight stays as projects require Perform other fabrication and shop leadership duties as assigned Required Qualifications Minimum 5 years of professional stick welding (SMAW) experience Minimum 2 years of supervisory or team leadership experience in a fabrication or manufacturing environment, real leadership, not just a title Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication and welding techniques Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and welding symbols Experience fitting and fabricating structural steel assemblies Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining quality and production schedules Clean driving record and reliable transportation Ability to lift 75 pounds and work in a physically demanding shop environment Preferred Qualifications AWS welding certification (current or previous) Experience with MIG (GMAW), Flux-Core (FCAW), and TIG (GTAW) welding Forklift and overhead crane experience Experience fabricating ornamental and architectural metalwork Experience working on luxury residential and commercial construction projects Skills Expert SMAW (Stick Welding) Structural Steel Fabrication Blueprint & Shop Drawing Interpretation Leadership & Team Management Quality Control & Inspection Project Coordination OSHA Safety Compliance Production Planning Problem Solving Time Management This role exists because we need someone who treats quality as personal, someone whose crew does it right the first time because their lead expects nothing less.
