Position Summary The Core Room Specialist is a highly skilled technical position responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and consistent production of quality foundry cores. This position serves as a technical resource for core room operators and management and helps ensure that core-making processes, equipment, materials, and quality standards are maintained. The Core Room Specialist will work closely with Production, Quality, Maintenance, and Management to identify problems, troubleshoot processes, improve productivity, reduce scrap, and ensure customer requirements are consistently met. Essential Responsibilities:
Core Production & Process Support Set up and operate core-making equipment as needed. Assist operators with proper machine setup, tooling, sand, resin, catalyst, and process parameters. Monitor core-making processes and identify abnormal conditions before they result in quality or production problems. Verify that cores are being produced according to work instructions, customer requirements, and established quality standards. Assist with startup and changeover activities. Support production of Shell, Cold Box, Iso Cure, Air Set, 3D-printed, or other core processes as applicable. Help establish and maintain standard operating parameters for each core process. Identify opportunities to improve cycle time, productivity, material usage, and overall efficiency. Troubleshooting Serve as a first-level technical resource when operators experience production or quality problems.
Troubleshoot core defects such as:
Cracks Veining Gas defects Soft or under-cured cores Dimensional problems Broken cores Poor strength Incomplete fills Blowouts Sand/resin-related problems Work with Quality and Maintenance to determine the root cause of recurring problems. Document problems and corrective actions when required. Escalate problems that cannot be resolved within the Core Specialist's authority. Quality Inspect cores and verify conformance to specifications. Understand and use core inspection equipment and measurement tools. Assist with dimensional checks, visual inspections, hardness/strength checks, and other applicable testing. Help identify trends in core quality and communicate them to management. Assist with first-piece and startup inspections. Support corrective actions and continuous-improvement activities. Help ensure nonconforming material is properly identified and controlled. Equipment & Tooling Assist with installation, setup, adjustment, and changeover of core boxes and related tooling. Monitor core boxes for wear, damage, venting problems, buildup, and other conditions affecting quality. Communicate tooling maintenance requirements to management and maintenance personnel. Assist with preventative maintenance activities within the employee's qualifications. Identify equipment problems that may affect production or quality. Materials & Process Control Monitor proper use of sand, resin, catalyst, coatings, release agents, and other core-making materials. Verify that materials are properly identified and used according to specifications. Help monitor resin and catalyst ratios and other critical process variables. Identify unusual material conditions and communicate concerns to management or Quality. Help reduce unnecessary material consumption and waste. Training & Leadership Train and coach core room operators on proper procedures and best practices. Help new employees learn equipment operation and core-making fundamentals. Lead by example regarding safety, quality, productivity, housekeeping, and attendance. Provide feedback to management regarding operator training needs and performance concerns. Help create a culture where operators understand why process controls are important, not just what buttons to push. Continuous Improvement Identify opportunities to improve: Productivity Core quality Scrap and rework Setup time Cycle time Material usage Equipment utilization Workplace safety Participate in Lean Manufacturing, 5S, root-cause analysis, FMEA, and other continuous-improvement activities as applicable. Assist in developing and improving work instructions and standard operating procedures. Track and communicate meaningful production and quality information. Safety Responsibilities Follow all company safety policies and procedures. Properly use required personal protective equipment. Immediately report unsafe conditions, injuries, equipment problems, and environmental concerns. Promote safe work practices throughout the Core Room. Never bypass safety devices or operate equipment outside established procedures. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Required Qualifications Previous experience in a foundry, core room, manufacturing, or similar industrial environment. Strong understanding of core-making processes and equipment. Ability to troubleshoot core-making problems. Ability to read and understand work instructions, drawings, specifications, and basic measurements. Basic mechanical aptitude. Ability to use measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other inspection equipment as required. Ability to communicate effectively with operators, quality, maintenance, and management. Ability to work independently and make sound decisions within established guidelines. Strong attention to detail. Reliable attendance and dependable work habits. Preferred Qualifications 3+ years of foundry or core-making experience. Experience with Shell, Cold Box, Iso Cure, Air Set, or 3D-printed core processes. Experience troubleshooting core defects. Experience with core box setup and maintenance. Experience with quality systems and root-cause analysis.
