Mohawk Steel & Glass | Hattiesburg, Mississippi Mohawk Steel & Glass is looking for an experienced Gaffer to join us for November 2026, with the possibility of continuing through December. Our hot shop sits on a 30-acre Christmas tree farm with about 8,000 trees, 30 goats, pigs, turkeys, and two dragons—our furnaces, Little Dragon and Big Dragon. From October through December, this place gets busy.
THE GAFFER JOB
This position is primarily customer-facing "make-your-own" glassblowing. You'll be helping customers make ornaments, pumpkins, cups, bowls and other simple blown-glass projects. We also host school field trips. A morning might begin with 30 students making ornaments, followed by public appointments and Date Nights from 2-8 PM or 2-9 PM. This is not an entry-level glassblowing position. You should already be comfortable working efficiently at the furnace, managing repeated forms, interacting with customers, and maintaining good work throughout a long day. Experience working with children and the public is important.
SCHEDULE
Our typical operating hours are:
WED-SUN 9 AM-1
PM and 2 PM-8 PM. Saturdays may run until 9 PM. Many days are simply 2 PM-8 PM, depending on reservations and field trips. We are generally open 5-6 days per week during the season. If you can work all of November & December that is our biggest need.
PAY, HOUSING & TIPS
This is a seasonal 1099 position. Typical MYO gaffer pay is $18-$23/hour, depending on experience. If your background is production this might not be a good fit for you because of the level of customer interaction. If you can do both, we can absolutely discuss that. We provide an artist apartment immediately beside the hot shop, or we have a camper/RV hookup if you prefer your own space. Tips are pooled among the 2-3 gaffers working. Historically, $75-$100 per day in tips is common during busy periods, although tips are obviously never guaranteed.
STUDIO EXPECTATIONS
This is not a residency, and during our busy season we do not have furnace time available for personal projects or selling personal work through the gallery. Spring is much better suited for that. We are serious about safety, efficiency and taking care of our customers—but we are also serious about having fun. Our customers are genuinely excited to blow glass, and we want the people working with them to enjoy that energy. It's physical work. It's repetitive work. It's long days on the busy weekends. And it's a pretty unusual place to spend November.
