The Operator II performs routine operational tasks, conducts laboratory analysis, maintains records, and assists with troubleshooting and repairs. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Operate and monitor treatment plant processes including preliminary, primary, secondary, and tertiary systems. Adjust equipment and process controls to ensure optimal performance and compliance with NPDES permit requirements. Conduct regular inspections of plant equipment such as pumps, motors, clarifiers, digesters, and disinfection systems. Collect and analyze samples for parameters including pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorine residual, turbidity, BOD, TSS, and ammonia. Maintain accurate and detailed operational logs, SCADA data, laboratory records, and maintenance documentation. Respond to system alarms, equipment malfunctions, and emergency conditions during assigned shifts or on-call rotations. Perform preventive maintenance tasks and assist with minor mechanical repairs. Assist with maintaining chemical feed systems, including dosing and inventory management (e.g., chlorine, polymers, alum). Clean and maintain plant grounds and facilities, ensuring a safe and orderly work environment. Assist with training and mentoring of Operator I and trainee-level staff. Maintain compliance with safety protocols including proper PPE use, confined space entry, and chemical handling. Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent required. Two (2) years of experience in the operation of a wastewater treatment facility, with at least one (1) year at a Grade I or higher plant. Licenses and Certifications Valid Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) . Valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of principles, practices, and equipment used in wastewater treatment processes. Familiarity with California water quality regulations and reporting requirements (including CIWQS). Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, process diagrams, and SCADA system data. Competence in performing mathematical calculations related to process control and laboratory testing. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and respond effectively to emergencies. Skill in using basic hand and power tools and following safety protocols. Strong communication and teamwork skills.
