Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator - Hatteras

Job Description

Performs difficult skilled technical work assisting with planning, directing and scheduling operations, maintenance and repair of the water treatment plant, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Water Treatment Plant Superintendent. Continuous supervision is exercised over Water Treatment Plant Operator. Performs daily inspections of plant for proper operation, troubleshooting and repair. Assigns, directs, trains and inspects the work of assigned staff; assists Operators with difficult repairs. Monitors gauges, meters, control panels, etc; records readings from meters and instruments. Collects and verifies that samples and analyses were completed; assists with laboratory analyses as needed. Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions. Prepares and obtains quotes for maintenance items, safety supplies, spare parts and equipment. Performs general building and grounds maintenance duties. Responds to inquiries from the general public on water quality. General knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a water treatment plant. General knowledge of hydraulic, chemical, and mechanical principles pertinent to water treatment plant operations. General knowledge of occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions. Skill in the use and care of hand tools. Ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors, and the public. High school diploma or equivalent. Three to five (3-5) years of experience in a related field or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. B-Well Water Treatment Operator Certification within one year of hire. Grade I Physical/Chemical Operator Certification within one year of hire. Process Control Chemistry and Bacteriological certification within one year of hire. Valid driver's license.
