City of Abbeville, SC Water Plant Operator The City of Abbeville is currently accepting applications for a Water Plant Operator. Pay depends on experience and licenses Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: Obtains on-the-job training in water treatment operations, procedures, and processes. Assists in maintaining adequate levels of safe drinking water that has been properly filtered and disinfected. Assists in performing specialized work in the operation of the water plant which involves such duties as regulating the rate of water flow to and from filters, washing filters, regulating machines, adding chemicals to water under treatment, replenishing machines with appropriate chemicals, reading, and changing charts and meters, maintaining log sheets and preparing operating reports. Assists in monitoring disinfectant levels, pH, turbidity, alkalinity, hardness, color, iron, fluoride, chlorine, water stability, chemical storage, chemical feed rates, system pressure, and flow rate, well pressure and flow rate, diesel fuel level, daily rainfall, and water system consumption rate. Assists in monitoring the amount of water demand which involves such duties as checking pump station, checking distribution system, and making sure water supply is available. Assists in reading and graduating flow meter charts and logs readings and takes samples for chemical analysis; performs various tests and maintains laboratory equipment. Interacts with groups such as co-workers, supervisors, and other City departments. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

High school graduate or equivalent with a Trainee permit in Water Plant Operations and less than one year of related experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid State driver's license. Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the department. Familiarity with the methods and practices of typical water treatment. Ability to learn all processes, procedures, and operations required for water treatment. Knowledge of the proper and safe procedures for operating equipment and machinery. Valid South Carolina driver's license with a good driving record. Must pass a thorough background investigation, pre-employment drug screen, and physical examination.
