Job Description

The Public Works Tech I maintains, monitors, installs, and repairs the City's water distribution, sewer collection systems, Water Plants, Wastewater Plant, public infrastructure and related facilities. Operates various machines including jackhammers, air hammers, sewer rotor, compactor, pipe cutting equipment, and lawn equipment. Operates backhoe, front-end loaders, tractors, and other machinery. Performs heavy manual labor, and frequent physical activities such as lifting, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling, and similar work activities. Perform any and all such duties as required or requested.
Qualifications:
Examples of Duties Operate and maintain small-medium size trucks, backhoe, tractors, water and sewer treatment equipment, pumps, mowers, etc. Responsible for the performance of assigned labor activities in utilities/streets, including labor tasks in the water, sewer and streets departments. Must be able to efficiently and safely operate a backhoe and certain types of equipment and tools. Must be able to read and record water meter readings. Operate and maintain water, wastewater and drainage systems while under supervision. Provides ground support for lineman operating in aerial bucket, on pole, trenches or underground facility environment. Cuts and clears brush at ground level. Perform preventative and emergency maintenance on various water and wastewater system components while under supervision. Operate a wide variety of hand tools and mechanical equipment. May perform minor field repairs on city equipment. Safely Operate a City Vehicle in the performance of all duties. Must have physical strength, hand eye coordination, endurance, and be able to concentrate on tasks and have the ability to understand and communicate information. Install water mains, taps hydrants and valves, work on main breaks and service leaks. Work on sewer main breaks, operate rooter machine for sewer backups Work on pumps and motors, climb ground and storage tanks at water plant Read water and electric meters, disconnect, reconnect meters Operate light and heavy equipment Stock vehicle with necessary equipment and material Clean, organize, and maintain facilities, tools, and equipment Mow and trim city properties Experience and Training High school diploma or equivalent. Must be at least 18 years of age. One year of laborer or general maintenance experience preferred but not required. One year of experience in construction or a related field Experience with hand and power tools; basic mechanical knowledge Certificates and Licenses Required Texas Water Class D License strongly preferred Job Hours Regular-Full time Compensation Starting $20.00 - $21.50 per hour, to be reviewed during annual evaluations with appropriate salary increases Probationary Period This position requires a six-month probationary period to demonstrate the abilities and aptitudes to perform the duties of the job before permanent employment.
