Director of Missional Engagement Virginia Conference United Methodist Church Glen Allen, VA Job Details Full-time $60,000 - $75,000 a year 23 hours ago Benefits Health insurance Dental insurance 401(k) Flexible spending account Paid time off Parental leave Professional development assistance Life insurance Retirement plan Qualifications Teamwork Program development Master's degree Bachelor's degree Theology Full Job Description Director of Missional Engagement — Full-Time Reports to: Assistant to the Bishop/COO The Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church is seeking a collaborative, mission-focused leader to serve as Director of Missional Engagement . This full-time position supports and strengthens the Conference's work in church development and revitalization, community engagement, and missional partnerships across Virginia. The Director will work closely with Conference leaders, districts, local churches, ministry partners, and community organizations to connect people and resources, strengthen collaborative ministries, and help congregations pursue renewed vitality and deeper engagement with their communities. The position also provides staff leadership and support to the Church Development Team, Missional Ministries Board, Partnerships of Hope, community engagement groups, and ministry and provisional ministry partners.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Connecting churches with training, coaching, consultation, and other resources
  • Convening and resourcing community engagement groups and missional partnerships
  • Supporting church development, redevelopment, revitalization, and congregational renewal
  • Strengthening relationships among local churches, districts, nonprofits, ecumenical partners, community organizations, and Conference ministries
  • Providing staff support to the Church Development Team and Missional Ministries Board
  • Directing relationships, review, accountability, and development processes for ministry partners and provisional ministry partners
  • Supporting Partnerships of Hope through communication, coordination, resourcing, and implementation
  • Developing systems to gather and communicate ministry needs, opportunities, stories, outcomes, and impact
  • Aligning church development and missional initiatives with the Virginia Conference's vision and priorities
  • Preparing reports, recommendations, and updates and supporting responsible stewardship of resources The ideal candidate will bring:
  • A bachelor's degree; a master's degree in ministry, theology, community development, nonprofit leadership, or a related field is preferred
  • Experience in local church ministry, community engagement, church development, congregational revitalization, nonprofit leadership, or related work
  • Demonstrated ability to convene diverse groups, build partnerships, and coordinate collaborative initiatives
  • Strong organizational, project management, communication, facilitation, and follow-through skills
  • A strong understanding of missional engagement, community partnership, church renewal, and congregational vitality
  • Knowledge of The United Methodist Church's polity, structure, mission, and connectional ministries is preferred
  • Experience with ministry evaluation, partner relationships, grant-funded ministries, or program administration is preferred
  • Ability to travel throughout Virginia and participate occasionally in evening and weekend meetings and events
  • A high level of integrity, discretion, judgment, and professionalism This position is particularly suited for a leader who can bring people together, build effective partnerships, equip congregations and ministries, and turn mission priorities into coordinated action that strengthens churches and communities .
